Abstract

This article analyzes significant features of the first stage in the development of the Spanish telephone system between 1877 and 1924. After a few introductory lines about the world expansion of the telephone, a description of its diffusion in Spain follows. The main conclusion outline first of all the relative backwardness of the Spanish telephone system in an international context during these years, and the internal regional differences. Secondly, the article shows the complex reasons that explain the peculiarities of the Spanish case, particularly the fluctuating State policy, the obstacles that the firms had to face to solve the contradictions between law and technology requirements, and economic backwardness.
