Abstract

The aim of this work is to analize the relationship between agrarian sector and the Spanish iron industry from 1841 to 1891. In those years, the iron industry lost the most of new demand derived from the economic growth; the result was that the agrarian sector was destined to be a very important market fort it, as the demand of horseshoes and nails to the Basque ironworks shows. However, the tariff policy applied since 1841 weakened the backward linkages of the agrarian sector with the iron industry. In addition, the backwardness of the former was a determining factor of the slow development of the industry.
