L'article fa una revisió de les principals teories i conceptes que han analitzat els processos de localització de l'activitat econòmica en el territori, així com de les polítiques públiques que hi han volgut incidir. Començant pels antecedents de la geografia econòmica, s'exposen teories clàssiques i referències als districtes industrials, la competitivitat regional i urbana, els clústers, i les més recents com el concepte de ciutat global, els territoris innovadors i l'especialització intel·ligent. S'ofereix també un repàs a l'evolució de les polítiques públiques de desenvolupament econòmic local, centrant-nos en els conceptes de la governança multinivell.
