Americans who care about their past should stand up and cheer for Oliver Stone. Certainly no other filmmaker in Hollywood is able to get the public so involved in open debates about history -its facts, its meanings, its modes of representation, its value in our lives. With Salvador he confronted the generally buried issue of American interventions into Central America; with Platoon and Born on the Fourth of July, he raised questions about the wisdom and morality of the Vietnam War; with JFK he suggested the possibility of conspiracy at the highest levels of the government of the United States.
