Zé Povinho, a National Portuguese Totem. Study of National Myths and Symbology
Medina, João
Universidade de Lisboa
Zé Povinho, the known figure created by Bordalo, has been always considered a manifestation of Portugal’s self-image, in spite of his ridiculing, even degrading, characteristics. This figure is comparable with other collective caricatures appearing in Italian, Czech or German cultures, which, at the same time, have their own particularities, as well as some phsycological contradictions. Despite the time which has passed, and the many changes which have taken place in Portugal, Zé Povinho have retained an unchanged symbolic meaning.

The Question of Mimesis in Brazilian Colonial Literature
Saltarelli, Thiago
Universidade Federal de Minas Gerais
This paper aims to investigate how mimesis rules Brazilian colonial literary production, considering a tension between its understanding as an imitation of nature or human actions and as an emulation of canonical authors and rhetorical topics. We propose that the crossing of those two understandings causes a transformation of the classical topics, without thereby considering colonial literature as original or detached from European literary series.

Contemporary Portuguese Feminine Poetry
Wolkoff, Gisele Giandoni
Universidade Tecnológica Federal do Paraná (UTFPR)
While gathering together both central and marginal authors, this paper intends to both redefine the importance of a possible feminine aesthetic in Portugal today, as well as to go back to discussions implied in concepts of identity and belonging. Finally, by enumerating the authors, their works and signalling clear-cut poetical references, we search for new perspectives on poetics and politics: contemporary, aesthetic poetics, inscribed in and through women.

Silent Body and Reclusiveness for Freedom and Madness: A Reading of Maria Teresa Horta’s <em>Ambas as mãos sobre o corpo</em> and <em>Ema</em>
Sant’Anna, Mônica
Universidade de Vigo, Grupo de Análise e Estudos da Literatura e da Tradutoloxía (GAELT)
This article offers an analysis of two of Maria Teresa Horta’s narrative titles Ambas as mãos sobre o corpo and Ema, where we observe that women were historically conditioned and trapped within a silent, submissive, reclusive and obedient web, under the male figures of the father and, thereafter, the husband. A metaphor can be seen in both titles, showing a great play of forces woven by men and women which determined a generation of women. This essay emphasises Maria Teresa Horta’s female characters and demonstrates the desire for freedom (of expression, in the use of the body, the voice and physical space) and the submissiveness of women of different generations to madness and reclusive conditions because of their desire for a different life.

Maria Susanna Cummins and Rosalía de Castro
March, Kathleen N.
University of Maine
The present article is a comparative study of The Lamplighter (1854), by the North American author Maria Susanna Cummins, and La hija del mar (1859) by the Galician author Rosalía de Castro, which questions the reception of the so-called sentimental literature. Parallels are established not only between the authors, but also between the protagonists of the novels, and special attention is paid to gender conditions related to social class, professional possibilities for the women of their time and for the way in which the idea of the home is conceptualized in relation to that of the nation.

‘The Eternal No-Return’: Melancholy and Deterritorialization in the Cántigas de Alén by José Ángel Valente
García Candeira, Margarita
Universidad de Huelva
The article explores Cántigas de alén, published in 1989 by José Ángel Valente, in light of the exiled and bilingual condition of its author. In this sense, the collection can be seen as a peculiar elegy for a part of Valente’s personal and authorial identity; its loss generates a melancholic pattern that encourages an impossible return. The premise of a Galician identity based in deterritorialization, in which a complex reformulation of saudade acquires a special relevance, is shaped by the precarious language.

Dialectical images of a story-teller. The fictional battle between the oral and the written in Quantas madrugadas tem a noite by Ondjaki
Pérez Durán, Gabriel
Universidade de Vigo
This article is an attempt to bring together two basic ideas. One the one hand, it presents both a succinct contextualization of the systematically linked literature of Angola and the works of Ondjaki, as well as a brief look at the process of establishing a differentiated Angolan literature. On the other hand, it will offer a hermeneutic reading of Quantas madrugadas tem a noite (2004). To this end, Walter Benjamin’s ‘der Erzähler’ (‘The Storyteller’) will act as the initial framework though which the friction in the novel between oral and the written will be approached.

Inside and Out: Narratives of Space and the Body in the Work of Four Galician Women Writers
García Fonte, M.ª dos Anxos
Independent Research
This article follows the traces of a special poetic narrative in the concepts of space and the body in four Galician women writers of the last third of the twentieth century: M.ª Xosé Queizán, Margarita Ledo, Xohana Torres and Úrsula Heinze. The symbolic construction of space in relation to the body in narrative is closely linked to the need of expressing new mentalities. These accompany the emergence of women and non-heterosexual men as protagonists in the public sphere and in Galician literature.

Between “Some” and “Others”. Reflections on the Poetry of Hélder Faife
Can, Nazir Ahmed
Universidade de São Paulo / FAPESP
Focusing on Poemas em sacos vazios que ficam de pé, by Hélder Faife, this article aims to reflect on the relationship between poetry and literary institutionalization in Mozambique. After some considerations on the positions in the literary field, we will observe how the author, in his first book, proposes a kind of intersection between language and society: based on small prosodic variations (that give an organic musicality to the verses) and morphosyntactic displacements (that suggest the general movement between the protagonists), Faife presents some of the major contradictions in the Mozambican urban space. Keywords: Hélder Faife, Mozambique, poetry, literary field.

Marcelo Mirisola, between memory and exaggeration: an example of autofiction à la brésilienne
Arrieta Domínguez, Daniel
Universidad Complutense de Madrid
Brazilian writer Marcelo Mirisola’s work is a good example of the so called «self-writing narrative». His two books O azul do filho morto, from 2002, and Charque, from 2011, show the constant drift between both the autobiographical and the fictional pacts that the author implicitly establishes with his readers. Using theoretical approaches related to autobiography and autofiction, we analyze Mirisola’s narrative, structural and thematic strategies, as well as his identification with both books’ narrators, with whom he shares, at least, his name.

Iberian humour as inspiration for João Cabral de Melo Neto’s Poetry
Carvalho, Alessandra
independent researcher
In spite of the great amount of critical works based on João Cabral de Melo Neto’s poetry, its underlying humor —an aspect the poet considered of the most relevant to his work— has yet to be analyzed in great depth. The present article presents and discusses a small sample of the use of the so called infundio sevillano, a satirical way of using language and a set of particular features that served as a model for João Cabral to create poems that shed a light on the prolific literary relationship established between himself, Sevilla, its inhabitants and its culture.

The feminist movement and children’s literary criticism in Galicia: a cartography
Pena Presas, Montserrat
Universidade de Santiago de Compostela
Normally, we do not refer to children’s and young adult literature as an area influenced by the feminist movement. However, since the beginning, an instructive conditioning was attributed to children’s and young people’s literature, placing it often in the educational field. Thus, the feminist movement dealt with the revision of many of these texts, within the context of activities in favour of coeducation. Galician literature was not an exception, so this paper aims to review the tasks carried out by feminists in order to analyze the existing books and streng then a new children’s and young adult literature

Ataque Escampe: thinking about resistance through music and literature
Fernández Villamarín, María
Universidade de Santiago de Compostela
Through the analysis of the songs of the band Ataque Escampe this article aims to determine if their musical discourse harbors a political attitude. In this case, the article will explore how the band maintains this critical and resistant character regarding certain sociopolitical conflicts in the Galician context, where two cultures coexist in inequality. Furthermore, it seeks to understand if, within this context, identities are fragmented or in the making, and what kind of social function the songs of the band exert in that hypothetical case.

This article promotes the reading of the novel No coração dos boatos (1984), writtenby the Brazilian writer Uilcon Pereira, which remains almost totally ignored three decadesafter its publication, despite (or maybe exactly for) being the most radical experimentin Brazilian contemporary fiction. The intention is to stimulate discussion about this literarywork, whose composition consists in a rollercoaster of intertextual operation, from a visionthat transcends the interest of Brazilian literary critics in the last years of the military government, mostly concentrated on what Antonio Candido defined as «literatura do contra».

The divided city: the territory of informality as an affective field

The contradictory nature of informal settlements open up a space to think about the complex implications of the contemporary city. This article proposes an affective reading which will enable a reconsideration of the negative conditions that de ne the informal city, with the aim of reorienting the research of effective transformations within these territories. An approach to the case of Rio de Janeiro will allow delving into the individual-territory relationship in order to relocate the subjective dimension of the city as a key factor in the socio-spatial articulation of informality.

The Silences of O Silencio Redimido
Alonso Nogueira, Álex
Brooklyn College, CUNY

Heteronormativity as an obstacle in poetic reading. The case of Elvira Riveiro Tobío

The depictions of the spice that circumnavigated the globe. The contribution of Garcia de Orta’s Colóquios dos Simples (Goa, 1563) to the construction of an entirely new knowledge about cloves
Carvalho, Teresa Nobre de
Centro Interuniversitário da História da Ciência e da Tecnología, Universidade de Lisboa
Cloves have been prized since Ancient times for their agreeable smell and therapeutic properties. With the publication of Colóquios dos Simples e Drogas he Cousas Mediçinais da Índia (Goa, 1563), Garcia de Orta (c. 1500-1568) presented the first modern monographic study of cloves. In this analysis I wish to clarify what kind of information about Asian natural resources (cloves in particular) circulated in Europe, from Antiquity until the sixteenth century, and how the Portuguese medical treatises, led to the emergence of an innovative botanical discourse about tropical plants in Early Modern Europe.

The Shadow of the «Other»: the Spanish Civil War and the strengthening of Portuguese hispanophobic nationalism

Drummond and the Spanish Civil War
Bortoloti, Marcelo

The article proposes to analyze the points of contact between Carlos Drummond de Andrade’s book Sentimento do mundo, published in 1940, and the Spanish Civil War poetry, which arose in the period immediately prior. Our hypothesis is that the communist ideology and literature that spread from the Revolution of 1917 in the Soviet Union, and particularly during the Spanish Civil War, influenced the production of the Brazilian poet, and were decisive in the formulation of his work from that moment until the end of World War II.

Hybrid Imaginaries: Emma Ríos
Vila, Marika
Independent Researcher
The success of American comics and Japanese manga that, since the end of the 20th century have invaded European markets and Spanish newsstands, have imposed their diverse imaginaries, did, at first, result in the Iberian Peninsula being deserted of its own production during those years. Over time, these have left an imprint that has had consequences for the resurgence of domestic creativity. It is possible to see their influence through the cultural mystification and aesthetic that are combined in the different symbolic elements of contemporary comics by following the trajectory of Emma Ríos in her incursion into the field of American comics through publications with Marvel and DC, and in particular by analysing the text Bella Muerte (Astiberri, 2016/2017; original: Pretty Deadly, edited by Image Comics) which the Galician author illustrates from the script by Kelly Sue DeConnick. It is thus possible to trace the desire for full authorship that culminates in the solo work (I.D., Astiberri, 2017; original by Image Comics) on identities and their construction.

The Uncertainty Surrounding The Values Of Contemporary Art in A vista particular, by Ricardo Lísias
Molina, Cristian J.
CONICET
The aim of this work is to analyze how the novel A vista particular, by Ricardo Lísias, interrogates its own belonging to the contemporary. Thus, the uncertainty surrounding the value of contemporary art that the novel promotes is analyzed, starting from a living work which is imagined as a prototype of the same.

Portugal at the Dawn of Scientific Modernity (16th Century)
Almeida, Onésimo T.
Brown University

Félix and Bento: Two Cases of A-relational Masculinity in Ressurreição and Dom Casmurro
Bota, Miquel
California State University, Sacramento

The Representation of the Spanish Civil War and Fascism in El siglo, by Javier Marías, and O ano da morte de Ricardo Reis, by José Saramago
Torres Rabassa, Gerard
Independent researcher

The European Utopia in Zweig’s Brazil. A Land of the Future
Fontanals, David
ADHUC, Universitat de Barcelona
The publication in 1941 of Stefan Zweig’s Brazil. A Land of the Future (Brasilien. Ein Land der Zukunft) was met both with great enthusiasm and harsh criticisms. Many reviewers thought that Zweig’s view of the country was too exotic, naive, idealistic, utopian, and even the result of the propaganda efforts carried out by the Vargas administration. In an attempt to understand and bridge the gap between Zweig’s idea of Brazil and the country’s «reality», this article analyzes the text hand in hand with Zweig’s memoirs and other of his non-fiction works from the perspective of his utopian thinking and ethical commitment to the notions of freedom, peace, cosmopolitanism, tolerance, and common understanding.

Vestiges and Functions of the Great Goddess Within the Galician Imaginary Through the Narrative of Méndez Ferrín
Carreira López, María
Independent researcher

Antón and the Innocents, by Méndez Ferrín. An Internationalist Conception of Contemporary Galicia from Vigo and its Sea
Blanco Casás, Antón
Independent Researcher

Nationalism, Identity and Cultural Recognition: Galician studies and the Post-National perspective
Losada Montero, José Antonio
Southwest Minnesota State University

The Lusitan Taint: Portuguese Roots and The Incivility of Brazil in Travel Literature, 18th and 19th Centuries
Torrão Filho, Amilcar
Pontifícia Universidade Católica de São Paulo (PUC-SP)
Between the 18th and 19th centuries, when the port of Rio de Janeiro became one of the most visited points in the Southern Hemisphere, and with the opening of Portuguese-Brazilian ports from 1808, and the transfer of the Portuguese Court to Brazil, many travelers left accounts of their time in Brazil. They weare soldiers, missionaries, artists, immigrants, scientists, and smugglers who, in the ow of Atlantic voyages, became rst-hand observers of an immense territory that was central in the context of the Napoleonic wars, international trade, and issues related to the slave trade. At that moment, they witness the overcoming of colonial ties in Portuguese America and the construction of the national state and the Brazilian nation. A recurring observation is the need to overcome the links with Portuguese culture, seen as an unhealthy origin that prevented the development of civilization through ignorance, superstition and the deleterious in uence of slavery. This image ended up being transferred to Brazilian histography, especially after the publication of Sérgio Buarque de Holanda’s classic, Raízes do Brasil, in 1936. This article intends to review some of these images about Portuguese civilization in Brazil by British and French travelers.

This paper examines the relationships between cognition and the design of verses, strophes, poems and an entire sequence in the cantigas d’amigo of the 13th century Galician poet Pero Meogo. The brain rewards itself for correctly predicting phenomena. Tension is greatest when a surprise delays a predicted event. In the ninth and last cantiga of Meogo we find unique virtuosity in the handling of leixa-pren and a unique change in rhyme-scheme just before the end of the poem and the sequence. There is, moreover, an extraordinary correspondence between Meogo 9 and a mother-daughter dialogue in a Serbian ballad transcribed in the early 18th century.

Symbiosis between industrial tourism and literary tourism

The new dynamics affecting the literary field today require new or lit tle-explored approaches and objects of analysis. This article uses the Portuguese context to reflect on an innovative format, the literary festival, from various angles:
how it is linked to the process of literature materialization, how it intersects with tourism, what are its (dis)connections to previous models, or the changes it fosters regarding the way the literary field works. By means of a significant mapping of lit erary festivals in Portugal, some reflections and relevant data about these tenden cies are provided.

Jorge Amado and African Portuguese-language writers: more than a king, more than a law, more than a language
Chaves, Rita

The Staging in Buenos Aires of an Excerpt from O Mariscal by Cabanillas and Vilar Ponte in a Festival in Support of Franco's Rebels
Biscainho-Fernandes, Carlos-Caetano

Autobiographism and fototextuality in 21st century Galician narrative: As voces baixas by Manuel Rivas and Virtudes (e misterios) by Xesús Fraga
Venzon, Ruben

Spilling out from the text: the hypersexualization and objectification of Galician women poets

The Carnation Revolution and the reinterpretations of Portuguese national myths in Brazil (1974)
Alecrim, Thales Reis

The perception of public power in Quarto de despejo by Carolina Maria de Jesus
Pentagna, Breno
