Cunqueiro in Catalonia: A Model of Intersystemic Relations
Lama López, María Xesús
Abstract: Panoramic study on Álvaro Cunqueiro and cunqueirian studies’ contact and exchanges with Catalan culture as a presentation of the context of intercultural relationships in which this monograph falls. The three areas dealt with, in a diverse criticism, are considered to be: personal relationships with Catalan cultural agents, allowing different collaborations and exchanges; professional relationships with the editorial and journalistic world, launching his work on the Spanish market; and repertorial relationships, shown in translations or in literary criticisms, made by the author of his own readings.

The aim of this article is to document and date, in detail, the relations between Cunqueiro and distinguished Catalan intellectuals in the 1950s and 1960s from memorial texts, news in journals and authors’ testimonies. Thus we can establish the chronology of these contacts and follow the reception of Cunqueiro’s work and personality in the Catalan press.

Álvaro Cunqueiro and the Defense of the Self-sufficiency of Art. An Approximation during the Sixties, in Destino
Ripoll Sintes, Blanca
Universitat de Barcelona (UB)
Although Álvaro Cunqueiro had worked closely as a writer in the weekly magazine Destino during the early Spanish post-war period, it was not until the sixties that he was once again present in Destino’s cultural pages. It was then, during the last throes of social realism in Spanish literature, that Destino held up the example of Cunqueiro as an alternative literary trend. In this study, we will analyse how Catalan literary critics (Guillermo Díaz-Plaja, Antonio Vilanova, Néstor Luján and Joan Perucho) defended the Galician writer’s work through the pages of Destino.

The John Rutherford Centre for Galician Studies, The Queen’s College, University of Oxford
This article examines the relationship between food and identity, taking as a case-study the gastronomic literature of the galeguista writer Álvaro Cunqueiro, mediator of Galician culture in the Spanish cultural field. This paper presents a reflection on the cross-pollination of ideas between Cunqueiro and a number of Catalan gourmets which focuses on the threat posed by the industrial revolution to the existence of a national cuisine.

Echoes of Portuguese Navigation in the Kitab-i Bahriye by Piri Reis
Loureiro, Rui Manuel
CHAM, FCSH – Universidade Nova de Lisboa
The world map drawn by Piri Reis in 1513, of which only the Atlantic fragment kept in Istanbul is known, is justly famous. Its surprising modernity is fully explained by the use of Iberian sources, resulting from nearly a century of exploration of both sides of the Atlantic by Portuguese and Spanish navigators, along with other collaborators. The ‘Book of maritime affairs’, prepared in the 1520s by the Turkish cartographer, gathering precious geographic and cartographic information about the Mediterranean and many other regions, is equally important, although rather less well known. In the foreword to his Kitab-i Bahriye, Piri Reis appears to be especially well informed about Portuguese explorations along the African coast and in the Asian seas, after the voyages of Bartolomeu Dias and of Vasco da Gama. Is it possible to identify the textual and cartographic sources used by Piri Reis in the preparation of both his cartographic works?

Clusius In Portugal: One voyage, Multiple Encounters
Carvalho, Teresa Nobre de
Centro Interuniversitário da História da Ciência e da Tecnología, Universidade de Lisboa
From 1564 to 1565, Clusius (1526-1609) travelled to the Iberican Peninsula as the tutor of the young heir of the Függers. This journey, which lasted nearly a year, took the two men to the most important cities in the Peninsula. If strolling through the Portuguese countryside demonstrated the peculiarities of the local flora to the botanist, the decreed visit to Lisbon offered many surprising experiences. The encounter with the work recently arrived from the Orient —Colóquios dos Simples e Drogas he Cousas Mediçinais da Índia, by Garcia de Orta (Goa, 1563)— awakened his interest. The present article weaves together considerations on the multiple impacts that the botanist’s voyage to Portugal caused in European science of the time.

Dialogue Between Latin and Portuguese in the 16th Century
Vázquez Diéguez, Ignacio
Universitat de Barcelona (UB)
In the 16th century, positions defending the use of the Portuguese language in all areas of writing, not only in literary production, emerged. Latin, as a highly scientific and legal language, proved to be inadequate for some spheres of knowledge and especially for the transmission of the information of new realities. The discoveries that came from the East demonstrated the relevance of the exclusive use of the vernacular, the Portuguese language, for such purposes.

Patrícia Melo. “Favela Novel” and Crime Novel. Genre/Gender
Losada Soler, Elena
Universitat de Barcelona (UB)
This article reflects upon two questions: is the “favela novel” a crime novel? And, is it possible to detect aspects of gender in Patrícia Melo’s “favela novels”? Arguably, the “favela novel” is a literature of violence, to be more precise, it is about the representation of violence. However, while the difference between the two may sometimes betenuous, these novels do not fit the paradigms of a crime novel. Additionally, from the analysis of the construction of the characters Máiquel and Reizinho (O Matador and Inferno), it is indeed possible to interpret a gender bias in Patrícia Melo’s texts.

On the Scale of Grey in Brazilian Crime Fiction
Martínez Teixeiro, Alva
Universidade de Lisboa
Martínez Pereiro, Carlos Paulo
Universidade da Coruña
In this essay, the intention is to map the plurality of crime writing —that is detective, mystery or crime fiction— which has appeared in Brazil over the last quarter of a century. Working from reflections which have already been published as well as specific reading choices, a “biased” corpus of reference has been established. It incorporates the spectrum of this unique grisaille fiction, with regard to the conventional parameters of the genre, in both the more orthodox works and the more unorthodox works, favouring those that examine the issues of human social concerns.

Rubem Fonseca and Noir Literature
Comellas, Pere
Universitat de Barcelona (UB)
Rubem Fonseca is considered a key author in the introduction of crime fiction in Brazil. This article reviews his contribution to the genre and analyzes the specifics of his narrative in the context of Brazilian literature, in which Fonseca breaks from and exceeds the traditional dichotomies between high and popular literature. Fonseca becomes part of the distinct tradition of crime fiction, which he reinterprets differently in his short stories by giving voice to the marginalized, and in his novels by incorporating elements of hardboiled, noir fiction, and even whodunit. The character of Mandrake is situated in a context that increasingly includes paraliterary concerns.

Artur Cortez, Modesto Navarro’s Detective: A “Whistle Blower” Ahead of His Time
Pranville, Pierre-Michel
CREPAL. Paris 3 - Sorbonne Nouvelle
Modesto Navarro published seven detective novels between 1982 and 2002. Artur Cortez, his detective, is an investigator who becomes personally involved in the revolutionary process that followed after April 25, 1974 in Portugal. This experience as an activist alters his values, his insight into Portuguese society and his investigative practices. He turns away from private investigations in order to work on investigations with a more collective dimension. By denouncing political or financial scandals such as those that hit the headlines of the young democracy, he became a social sentry and a “whistle blower” ahead of his time.

Crime Novel or Generic Hybrid? The Intimate Side of Evil in Todo é silencio by Manuel Rivas
Lama López, María Xesús
Manuel Rivas’ contribution to crime fiction analyzes drug trafficking and the social and political corruption associated with it from a peculiarly intimate perspective. The justification for the fluctuation in the novel between the bildungsroman and the crime novel is the use of adolescents as main characters, thereby bringing to the fore the way in which organized crime breaks apart both society and individuals, as everyone, including the criminals, is destroyed by their engagement with a corrupt power. The narrative focus reinforces social and moral criticism, and relegates the restoration of order and justice to the plane of utopia.

Place, Silence, and Local Memory in Todo é silencio by Manuel Rivas
Anderson, Neil D.
Texas Tech University
This article addresses issues of local memory in Manuel Rivas’s novel Todo é silencio (2010) and takes as its starting point Pierre Nora’s twin notions of lieu de mémoire and milieu de mémoire. By focusing on a specific site portrayed in the novel —the escola de indianos, a building that once housed a progressive school— we analyze the ways in which the author deploys the building not merely as a setting, but also as aestheticization of the interstices between history, memory, and forgetting.

Galicia, or the Spurious Child: Illegitimate Origins in the Modern Novel
Barreto, Danny M.
Colgate University
The present article uses Suso de Toro’s Sete palabras as a starting point for analyzing the protagonism of illegitimate children in the Galician novel since the Rexurdimen- to. Considered in a historical context and as a literary trope, the illegitimate child can be read as an expression of anxiety around a national identity rested upon a notion of purity, be it linguistic, ethnic or territorial. These unclear origins, rather than preclude the possibility of identity formation and history —individual or collective— can serve as a source for alternative histories and identities.

The Portuguese Government against Castelao: The Galician Adventure of the CITAC

During the Academic Crisis of 1969, the Círculo de Iniciação Teatral da Academia de Coimbra in Portugal (CITAC) was working on the play Castelao e a sua época, directed by the Catalan Ricard Salvat. The play was banned by the Portuguese Police during the Estado Novo dictatorial regime, and the director was forced to leave the country. In this article I will analyse some of the artistic elements of this play, relating them to both Salvat’s work in Portugal and to the presence of Bertolt Brecht’s theories during the Portuguese dictatorship.

This article offers an overview of the configuration of the I in Xela Arias’s work and its complex relationship with the Other in her four poetry books, published between 1986 and 2003. My aim is to analyse Arias’s work from this perspective, to discuss several key factors that situate the author in her context, and to assess both the originality of her work and her contribution to modernizing Galician poetry. Some final notes on the re- ception of Arias’s poetry at the time of publication and in subsequent years are also offered.

Something in Between: Galician Literary Studies Beyond the Linguistic Criterion
Liñeira, María
The John Rutherford Centre for Galician Studies, The Queen’s College, University of Oxford
The history of literary phenomena is intertwined with the history of multilingualism. And yet, the study of literature is usually done within the paradigm of the national literature as developed in the 19th century which, from the premise of the existence of a single national language, rarely deals with the production in other languages. This article examines the shortcomings of the imposition of the linguistic criterion applied to the Galician context paying attention to an unexplored area of intersection between national literatures, namely the literary translation of Luis Pimentel’s poetry. It concludes by proposing a new understanding of Galician literary studies beyond the linguistic criterion that offers a more nuanced account of the literary field.

From mist to mist — through mist: translating «this kind of non-book»
Tocco, Valeria
Universitá di Pisa
In Italy there are presently five translations of The Book of Disquiet, each one featuring a very different text: either because the base edition from which each translator set off is different; or because the translators had a different attitude towards the base edition; or even because each translator imposed his or her own translation methodology onto the metatext. In these pages, I intend to reflect on the guidelines that I followed when translating and editing, for the third time in Italy, «this kind of non-book».

The translator’s disquiet or daring to make Bernardo Soares speak catalan
Dols, Nicolau
Universitat de les Illes Balears, Institut d’Estudis Catalans
Sampol, Gabriel de la S. T.
Universitat de les Illes Balears
The relationship between literary translation and editing, understood as the stabilisation of the original, increases the complexity of a process that is generally only studied in the diversification of the final product, in the output of the translation. An editorial history of the Book of Disquiet, by Fernando Pessoa, becomes an example of how we can add the differed edition of the text to this already understood complex process. In its entirety, this is an opportunity to demonstrate the relationships that exist between diverse literary moments: creation, edition, publishing, translating, and various re-editions. This article studies translation as a process of decision-making which multiplies possible options, as well as through the concept of translatability, understood as the attraction factor implicating the text in translation.

Blind Narcissus, illuminated by Lisbon (From Cesário Verde to Fernando Pessoa)
Pizarro, Jerónimo
Universidad de los Andes
Eduardo Lourenço referred to Fernando Pessoa as a “Blind Narcissus”, quoting a passage of the The Book of Disquiet (Libro del desasosiego). In its first stage, The Bookof Disquiet has no defined geographical space nor an established historical time; in its second stage, it achieves concrete space and temporal coordinates. The purpose of this text isto evince the importance of those coordinates — those of Lisbon at the beginning of thetwentieth century — and reiterate how important the work of Cesário Verde was for Pessoa and his return to the Book towards 1929, after a creative interruption of almost ten years.

The Book of Disquiet, the aesthetics and materiality of sensations
Giménez, Diego
Universitat de Barcelona (UB)
This paper correlates the aesthetic theorization of sensation with the materiality of sensation in The Book of Disquiet. The different editions of Fernando Pessoa’s work have, in the text or fragment, a unity of expression that the publishers put in order following a varietyof criteria. This paper argues that these unities are based on a conceptualization of sensation, such that the identity and the time of the narrative are inscribed according to impressions provoked by the writing.

Livro do Desassossego: translating, reading, and deciphering the text
Zenith, Richard
Independent Researcher and Translator
This article develops Richard Zenith’s views as the editor and translator of Livro do Desassossego and his useful reflections on authorship, editing and translating. It also presents paradigmatic examples of the difficulties of reading certain parts of LdD as well as an analysis of how these textual variants can alter the (ficticious) authorship, editing and translation criteria of this work in an international context.

Books of Disquiet – In the Plural
Lopes, Teresa Rita
FCSH – Universidade Nova de Lisboa
In this essay, Teresa Rita Lopes defends the theory of a triple fictional authorship for Livro(s) do Desassossego, as she adds the pseudo-heteronym Baron de Teive to Vicente Guedes and Bernardo Soares, the two authors who had already signed some editions of Livro. This theory is followed by the author in her recently launched critical edition of LdD (Brasil), which provides relevant developments in the text’s setting

Fiction writers, university students and the restrictions of Brazil’s literary field today
Mello, Jefferson Agostini

Between kludges and displacements: signed Marcelo Mirisola
Azevedo, Luciene

Minimalism and sociability in crisis: masks of alterity in the works of Marcelino Freire and André Sant’Anna
Dias, Ângela Maria
Universidade Federal Fluminense / CNPq

The deterritorialization and internationalization of the saraus in the periphery of São Paulo

«Para Inglês Ver»: Translations of Contemporary Brazilian Literature in the Age of the Megaevents
Williams, Claire
St Peter’s College, University of Oxford

Digitizing Galicia: Cultural Policies and Trends in Cultural Heritage Management
Volkova, Ekaterina
The University of Auckland http://orcid.org/0000-0003-0567-703X
Cultural policies have developed in Galicia significantly since the establishment of the 1981 Statute of Galician Autonomy. The Galician government has played a key role in the Galician cultural scene. However, the civil and, especially, private sectors have made a substantial contribution to the promotion of different areas of Galician culture. This article presents an overview of Galician cultural policies focusing on the area of cultural heritage management in the global era, particularly on the uses of new information and communication technologies and digitization.

Santiago de Compostela and the Spatial Articulation of Power: From the Cathedral to the Cidade da Cultura
Bermúdez, Silvia
University of California-Santa Barbara
To examine the notion of «Glocal Galicia» this essay focuses on the series of architectural, political, and economic enterprises carried out to transform the remote site known as Campus Stellae first into a sacred pan-European journey’s end in the Middle Ages—via the Camiño de Santiago (Way of St. James)—and then into a 21st century global destination that works within Disneyfication processes. Particular attention is paid to two distinct productions of material space—the securing in the 12st century of metropolitan status for Santiago de Compostela, and the inauguration on January 2011 of the incomplete Cidade da Cultura de Galicia (City of Culture of Galicia). In both instances, each architectural endeavor sought to supersede its locality while exposing the manners in which space, place, and capital are intertwined.

Far from the Family Tree: Queering Genealogies and Literary Archives in Outono aquí by Mario Regueira
Barreto, Danny M.
Colgate University
This article offers an analysis of the ways in which Mario Regueira’s novel, Outono aquí, and its characters challenge the silence imposed upon non-hegemonic national and sexual identities and narratives. Outono aquí establishes—through a series of intertextual references—a literary genealogy that exceeds the limits of sexuality, language, and nation, to offer a queer Galician literary aesthetic that, far from marginal, can only be understood in a transnational and transhistoric context.

This essay analyzes recent experimental documentaries by Lois Patiño and Xurxo González (aka Xurxo Chirro) within the context of the Novo Cinema Galego, its digital modes of production, its geographical aesthetics, and the ways in which it visualizes ever-evolving notions of Galician identity and point of view. While these directors’ films problematize formal barriers, boundaries, and distinctions, they also draw special attention to national and regional geographies, cultures, identities, languages, in order to make the Galician Worldview visible on screen

Lois Patiño’s Landscapes: Aura, Loss, Duration
Keller, Patricia
Cornell University
This essay is a reflection on Galician landscapes through a close reading of Lois Patiño’s experimental documentary film, Costa da Morte, and has two parts. The first is about temporality and the concept of duration, and asks how duration intersects with certain modes of deceleration in cinema, understood as an aesthetic but also as a structural mechanism of slowing down and capturing stillness. Here, I am particularly interested in photographic stasis when channeled through film, as well as the use of photography and stillness in cinema as an evocation of death. The second part explores landscape as an ecstatic, auratic, and sublime force; as a space of encounter, or «living tapestry»—a place in which the emergence of and absorption by the visible is always uncannily predicated on a poetics of disappearance, invisibility, and loss.

The Sources of Ferdinand Magellan’s Navigation Project
Loureiro, Rui Manuel

Considerations on the Primary Sources that Report on the Armada de Molucas’ Crossing of the Strait of Magellan

The Transmission and Bibliographic Study of the Pigafetta Account: Synthesis and Update
McCarl, Clayton
University of North Florida
For its value as a historical source and as a singular piece of writing, Antonio Pigafetta’s account of the Magellan-Elcano expedition has appeared in diverse places, and over the centuries. Numerous scholars have worked to establish the history and nature of those editions and translations. This study pursues three objectives related to Pigafetta’s account: to articulate a synthesis of the publication history; to summarize the development of research on that transmission; and to identify trends, controversies and possible gaps in that scholarship.

The Malaysian Glossary by the Knight Pigafetta

Explorar as notas dominantes dessas "literaturas" é nosso principal objetivo nesse artigo.

“At the End, All that’s left are the Teeth”: the Desecration of Death in Carvão Animal, by Ana Paula Maia

Poetics of Exile: Ancestral Memories and Literary Tradition in Carolina Maria de Jesus and Conceição Evaristo

Where are the Readers? Social Networks and LGBTQI+ Literature

The "Qatsi" trilogy

https://orcid.org/0000-0002-4411-7580

Beyond the nation: a journey through the poetic imaginaries of Eduardo White
Spinuzza, Giulia

DecliNation of semantic spaces in As Duas Sombras do Rio by João Paulo Borges Coelho
Wieser, Doris
Universidade de Coimbra https://orcid.org/0000-0002-9448-5787
The cultural heterogeneity of many African countries in post-colonial times makes it difficult to create a sense of national belonging. For this reason, the FRELIMO government in Mozambique focused on the devaluation of culture-spe cific traditions with the aim of homogenizing and “modernizing” the nation. Against this background, the novel As duas Sombras do Rio by João Paulo Borges Coelho deals with the loss of identity and the feeling of being uprooted. The aim of the present article is to examine the representation of nation building in the novel us ing Lotman’s concept of semantic spaces.

“Let us look in silence, let us learn to listen”. Saramago’s trans-Iberism and the ecocritical and decolonial debate
Baltrusch, Burghard

1986 – The death year of the Portuguese political-economic freedom: critical notes surrounding the romance The Stone Raft
Vecchio, Daniel

Impossible dialogues in post times: geographical locations and identities in José Saramago and Ruy Duarte de Carvalho
Apa, Livia

José Saramago: from iberism to trans-Iberism
Reis, Carlos
