En este artículo se propone que la capacidad humana para la interacción interpersonal constituye una capacidad cognitivamente diferenciada y motivada. La base motivacional de dicha capacidad la proporciona la Teoría de la Autodeterminación de Deci y Ryan (2002). Dicha teoría propone tres necesidades organísmicas básicas que requieren de “los otros” para su satisfacción:la autonomía, la competencia y la vinculación. En cuanto a su naturaleza como capacidad cognitivamente diferenciada se revisan las aportaciones más recientes de la investigación cognitiva y neurocognitiva, así como la contribución de la teoría del Apego de Bowlby que integra las necesidades con las representaciones mentales, la historia evolutiva y las diferencias individuales. También se incluyen los fundamentos filogenéticos de esta capacidad interpersonal según la perspectiva de la psicología evolucionista y, a modo de conclusión, se señalan las certezas y limitaciones del estado actual del conocimiento, así como algunas orientaciones futuras en la investigación.

En este artículo se presenta una revisión histórica de los trabajos de la Psicología Transcultural en el ámbito de la percepción desde una perspectiva de análisis determinada, la de la Psicología Histórico-Cultural. O dicho de otro modo, partimos de la Psicología Histórico-Cultural como fuente de inspiración teórica para la descripción de los mecanismos de “mediación” cultural e histórica en la explicación de los resultados de la Psicología Transcultural. En este trabajo argumentaremos la necesidad de una visión de la percepción como un proceso constructivo producto de la interacción entre el sujeto y su medio físico y cultural. La percepción implicaría, por tanto, la adquisición de hábitos de inferencia ecológicamente válidos que varían en la medida en que las experiencias de los individuos sean distintas. Ello confiere sentido al estudio de las diferencias en la percepción y al análisis de las causas que la generan a través de la investigación de las prácticas cotidianas en las que los individuos participan y se desarrollan.

Los vínculos que las personas establecen con los espacios han sido objeto de análisis desde múltiples perspectivas. El apego al lugar, la identidad de lugar, la identidad social urbana o el espacio simbólico urbano son algunos de los principales conceptos con que se abordan procesos que dan cuenta de la interacción de las personas con los entornos y sus principales efectos. El fenómeno de la apropiación del espacio supone una aproximación conceptual cuya naturaleza dialéctica permite concebir algunos de estos conceptos de manera integral. Este planteamiento teórico viene siendo útil, más allá de su incidencia en la comunidad científica, para el abordaje de cuestiones como la construcción social del espacio público, la ciudadanía, la sostenibilidad (ambiental, económico y social) y en suma para aportar elementos teóricos y empíricos que permitan investigar e intervenir modos de interacción social más eficaces, justos y adecuados a las demandas sociales actuales.

A partir de una revisión del campo de la violencia o abuso psicológico,se realiza una aproximación a su delimitación y se analiza su aplicación en tres ámbitos distintos para estudiar las similitudes y diferencias existentes entre ellos. En concreto, se estudia el abuso psicológico aplicado en grupos manipulativos como algunas sectas, el aplicado en la violencia de pareja y el aplicado en el contexto laboral (mobbing). A través de un amplio análisis de las investigaciones realizadas y de las escalas de medida construidas sobre el tema, se obtienen, desde un enfoque psicosocial, tres nuevas clasificaciones de estrategias de abuso psicológico, una para cada ámbito, que permiten el análisis comparativo de los tres fenómenos. La comparación muestra un importante paralelismo entre las estrategias utilizadas en los tres ámbitos, especialmente entre las utilizadas para el sometimiento de un adepto al grupo y las utilizadas para el sometimiento del cónyuge o pareja.

En este estudio se examinó longitudinalmente durante un año la producción de deícticos de 4 niños de 1 año y 4 niños de 2 años de edad en situaciones interactivas con sus madres en el hogar. Primero, se comparó la producción de términos deícticos con la de palabras de clase abierta y de clase cerrada y se relacionó aquélla con la longitud media de los enunciados que incluyen uno o más deícticos. Luego, se observó el orden de emergencia de los términos deícticos contando desde su primera aparición. A continuación, se analizaron los cambios en la producción de deícticos según su dimensión semántica (espacial, personal y temporal), su categoría gramatical (pronombres, adjetivos yadverbios) y sus formas morfológicas de género, número y distancia. Los resultados indican que desde su emergencia los deícticos sirven para anclar el discurso del hablante y del oyente en el centro deíctico (yo, aquí, ahora, este) y sugieren la relevancia del dominio espacial para el adecuado desarrollo de los deícticos personales.

La investigación psicosocial que vincula las actitudes de género y la identificación social feminista con la identidad de género es reciente. Este artículo se centra en la revisión crítica de los estudios sobre la relación entre las actitudes y la identidad social feminista. Partiendo de la teoría de la autoestima colectiva, se revisan los estudios, la metodología y las hipótesis que relacionan la identidad social de género con la identidad feminista. La representación social del feminismo aparece como un factor relevante en el proceso de identificación social. Finalmente se indican las limitaciones de estos estudios y se proponen hipótesis sobre la investigación y la relación entre la defensa del feminismo y la identificación social como feminista.

La violencia contra las mujeres en general y en la pareja en particular ocurre en todos los grupos étnicos y sociales y no está directamente relacionada con clase social, nivel cultural o raza. Sin embargo, perduran ciertos mitos al respecto y algunas investigaciones insisten en que esta violencia ocurre casi exclusivamente en entornos sociales problemáticos y está determinada por ciertas características individuales de los maltratadores. El objetivo de este trabajo es analizar las características demográficas y de comportamiento, y los antecedentes de los maltratadores en casos de violencia contra las mujeres en la pareja, ofreciendo algunos argumentos empíricos para deshacer dichos mitos. Para ello, se administró una amplia entrevista a una muestra de 142 mujeres maltratadas que incluía cuestiones sobre ellas mismas, sus relaciones y su pareja. Aquí se presentan los resultados relativos a sus parejas. Los datos obtenidos muestran que esta forma de violencia ocurre en todas las condiciones sociales y que factores habitualmente considerados como causa de este problema, como son el consumo del alcohol u otras drogas, la enfermedad mental o la historia de violencia en la familia de origen, sólo están presentes en un porcentaje variable de maltratadores. Además, y con objeto de profundizar en ese análisis se revisan las relaciones entre estas variables y las conductas violentas cometidas y se discuten las implicaciones de estos resultados.

En este estudio se analizan las relaciones entre las características del sistema familiar (funcionamiento, comunicación y satisfacción familiar), el apoyo social percibido y la conducta delictiva en la adolescencia. La muestra está constituida por 431 adolescentes estudiantes en centros educativos de la Comunidad Valenciana de edades comprendidas entre los 15 y los 17 años. Los resultados muestran efectos directos de los problemas de comunicación con la madre y del apoyo social percibido del padre en la conducta delictiva. Además, se constata un efecto mediador del apoyo social del padre entre los problemas de comunicación con la madre y la implicación del hijo adolescente en actos delictivos. Finalmente se discuten las implicaciones de estos resultados.

Se presentan datos correspondientes a una muestra de 137 estudiantes de una academia militar evaluados durante su periodo de formación. El estudio tiene como objetivo establecer si las variables de personalidad (estilos de personalidad y afrontamiento) y cognitivas (inteligencia) permiten predecir las trayectorias de los estudiantes exitosos y no exitosos que habían recibido entrenamiento militar y académico durante un periodo de cuatro años. Se administraron las pruebas MIPS (Inventario Millon de Estilos de Personalidad), la escala de Estrategias de Afrontamiento ACS y el test de matrices progresivas de Raven. Severificó que aquellos cadetes que tuvieron una trayectoria académica exitosa se diferenciaban por tener estrategias de afrontamiento dirigidas a resolver el problema, una mayor capacidad de pensamiento abstracto y un estilo de personalidad independiente poco conformista y dominante. Las variables estilos depersonalidad diferenciaban a los grupos de rendimiento académico alto, medio y bajo. Las variables de inteligencia y estilos de afrontamiento a los de rendimiento académico, medio y alto, respecto de los de bajo rendimiento.

Se analiza la convergencia entre la información recogida de padres y profesores, mediante escalas de valoración, y el diagnóstico clínico en una muestra de 126 niños: 42 con Trastorno por déficit de atención con hiperactividad (TDAH) tipo combinado, 21 con Trastornos del aprendizaje (TA) y 63 controles, con edades comprendidas entre los 4 y los 12 años. El grupo de TDAH presenta mayor número de síntomas y de conductas asociadas al TDAH, seguido del grupo con TA y del grupo de control. Un análisis discriminante paso a paso muestra que la información que proporcionan profesoresy padres es útil para clasificar a los participantes con TDAH y controles, y algo menos exacta para los participantes con TA.

El presente estudio explora teórica y empíricamente el concepto y la medida del índice de calidad de los procesos y recursos humanos de las organizaciones (ICPRH) como parte de la calidad del sistema humano de las mismas. Este índice integra operativamente los resultados en las personas, y las características de la organización, propios de los conceptos de calidad de vida laboral y del capital humano respectivamente. Para la medición del ICPRH se ha utilizado una muestra de 1.785 sujetos de 15 empresas. Se han realizado análisis correlacionales entre el ICPRH, y los ítems e índices de cada una de las dimensiones y/o constructos del modelo general Auditoría del Sistema Humano (ASH) a partir de los cuales se conforma. Las correlaciones halladas son significativas (p0.001) en la mayoría de los casos. Para comprobar la capacidad de discriminación del ICPRH entre grupos de sujetos con puntuaciones extremas en las diferentes dimensiones del ASH, se sometieron los datos a pruebas t de comparación de medias obteniéndose resultados significativos (p0.001) que confirman la capacidad dediscriminación del índice. Los resultados corroboran el planteamiento teórico realizado y dan algunas indicaciones para una posterior elaboración de un constructo y su validación.

Cada día son más abundantes los estudios que muestran que los factores psicológicos juegan un papel clave en el proceso del dolor. Desde el campo del dolor se ha importado el modelo de estrés de Lazarus para el estudio de estos factores psicológicos. Esta teoría sugiere que el estrés que sufre un sujeto ante un evento potencialmente amenazante se debe a cómo lo evalúa y a cómo lo afronta. Traduciendo este modelo a la experiencia del dolor: el estímulo doloroso provocará más o menos discapacidad según cómo sea evaluado y afrontado. En el presente trabajo, realizamos una revisión de los trabajos más actuales en el campo del dolor articulándolos dentro del modelo de Lazarus. En una segunda parte del artículo, describimos las técnicas interdisciplinares que se emplean en el tratamiento del dolor crónico. Por último, animamos a que el modelo de Lazarus se emplee como guía para el diseño de futuras terapias.

El análisis de la violencia bullying y de los procesos de victimización, basados en relaciones de abuso de poder, resulta sumamente pertinente, dada su interrelación con procesos psicosociales tales como la exclusión grupal, el liderazgo, la indisciplina y las conductas disruptivas. En este estudio se ofreceun análisis descriptivo de las actitudes ante la agresión social y el acoso entre iguales en un colectivo de 329 estudiantes de secundaria. A pesar de que la mayoría de los adolescentes presentan unas actitudes contrarias al empleo de la violencia física, se muestran más permisivos ante otras manifestaciones indirectas, como el empleo de la violencia verbal y psicosocial (poner motes, propagar rumores, exclusión grupal de las víctimas, etc.). Se han hallado diferencias inter-género en el sentido de que los chicos muestran unas actitudes más permisivas. Asimismo, se han obtenido diferencias significativas en función del nivel académico, constatándose una valoración más negativa entre el alumnado de niveles académicos inferiores.

Este estudio mide y describe aquellas características del funcionamiento psicológico de los adolescentes que, en caso de intensificarse, pueden transformarse en desajustes del desarrollo o en trastornos psicopatológicos. Para ello se trabajó con el Inventario Clínico para Adolescentes de Millon (MACI; Millon, 1993) en un grupo de 561 adolescentes chilenos, de entre 14 y 18 años, no-consultantes y normalmente escolarizados. En este grupo se identificaron 150 adolescentes que sin presentar problemas emocionales o conductuales evidentes obtuvieron en el MACI escalas con puntajes extremos. Para ellos se evaluó el significado clínico de las puntuaciones extremas en las escalas del MACI a través de tres tipos de perfiles que emergieron de un análisis de conglomerados realizado con las puntuaciones en dichas escalas.

Este trabajo pretende ser un análisis de la confesión entendida como “terapia psicológica” previa a la institucionalización de la psicología. Para realizar este análisis, y después de resumir el desarrollo histórico de las prácticas que preceden a la confesión (especialmente las estoicas) y presentar el contexto histórico de ésta, se acude al Manual de los confesores del Abate J. Gaume (1864) como ejemplo representativo. The paper examines the legal framework concerning the socialneed to adapt environments for old people with specific requirements (the law of ccuniversal accessibility, equal opportunities and non-discrimination against disabled peopleu, and the Spanish Royal decree on ccthe procedure for the recognition, declaration and qualification of the degree of disabilityu). The advantages of the Universal Design approach are emphasizedand contrasted with the limitations of other approaches that develop specific devices for disabled people. The paper also discusses the most significant age-related changes, that is, in relation to vision, audition, motor control and cognition and makes suggestions for applying basic universal design principies in order to compensate for the limitations of the elderly.

This study describes the,field of cognitive ergonomics and discussesthe relation between this discipline and cognitive psychology. We argue against the view commonly held by scientists that cognitive ergonomics is merely the applied science of cognitive psychology and describe studies that support the role of cognitive ergonomics as a basic science. Finally, we propose a conceptual framework for the work of the cognitive ergonomist, in order to promote joint research projects involving cognitive ergonomics and cognitive psychology.

The introduction of modern technology in almost every human environment imposes higher cognitive demands on people pegorming everyday tasks. This is why mental workload is a topic of increasing importance. There is no agreement on the definition of mental workload, nor any unit of measurement. It is usually assessed through un array of methods that focus on items ranging from its possible sources to the opinions of thepeople performing a specific task. Mental fatigue (induced by infraload as well as by overload) and the mistakes that may arise from it are two of the main consequences that should be analysed fiom the perspective of their ca~ise- that is, information processing. Finally, the paper describes the current attempts to standardize the coiacept of mental workload.

This paper describes un Expert System to evaluate ergonomic and psychosocial aspects of workplaces. The project creates software for prevention technical staff that can generate a reliable evaluation with the minimum volume of data possible, and give simple recommendations for improvement or apply a specific method for a more detailed study. The system has been implemented on Pocket-PC (PDA) hardware in order tofacilitateits use by prevention technical personnel in the WP, and has the necessary PC connectivity functions to generate evaluation reports.

The development of the understanding of the concept of day andnight is studied in children from Barcelona and from the Karaja tribe in Brazil, of several ages. Different conceptions of this understanding are identified in the groups and compared with each other. The instruments used is a semi-structured interview, administered individually. A qualitative analysis of the answers to this interview identifiesfive conceptions in the Barcelona children andfive in the Karaja children, which are classified in four categories: (a) conceptions based on apparent perceptions, (b)conceptions that articulate data on the apparent perception with cultural knowledge, (c) conceptions that are misinterpretations o f cultural knowledge and (d) scientijic conceptions. The distribution of the frequency of the two groups in the different conceptions indicates that a development of this knowledge exists, and is age-related. Results of the cross-cultural comparison reveal that the conceptions are fairly homogeneous, which is explained by a process of common construction and by the access of bothgroups to a scientific explanation. The differences draw attention to the determination of the apparent perception in the initial construction of this knowledge.

The aim of this study is to analyse changes in selj-esteem with age, and to determine which variables contribute to its development. We are also interested in studying dzzerences between boys and girls. The sample comprised 221 boys and 292 girls, between the ages of 12 and 19. They completed a questionaaire including scales on self-esteem, family and peer relationships, and schoob pe rformance. The results showed that there are no significant diflerences between levels of self-esteem in boys and girbs. Furthermore, the data emphasized the role of caregivers and peers in the development of selj-esteem. However, school performance was important to self-esteem only in the girls, not in the boys. These and other resultsare discussed.

Most of the literature on social support stresses the positive effect of social support groups on the improvement of the participants' quality of life. However, there are few references to the ways in which these groups function. This project has two main objectives: first, to explain the procedure and structure of the work carried out in the development of the support groups, and to assess the results; second, to assess the effect of these groups on participants' perception of their social support. The resultsshow that the elderly feel satisfied with their participation in the groups and there was a clear increase in the perception of social support after the participation. Therefore, the instruments have proved to be useful to pro,fessionals in the field in their attempts to follow the evolution of the group.

This article studies the experiences of a group of adults by meansof a half-structured interview. The purpose is to detemzine the areas of personal and social development from the perspective of the life cycle theory. The methodological framework is the narrative approach, which facilitates the descriptive and interpretative use of adults' experiences. In this approach, the act of recounting our experiences makes cornmunication easier and gives meaning to our lives, and also opens up new areas of personal development. This study groups and summarizes data under three main areas: life history, personal integrity and generative concern. These three broad areas have been represented by three charts or life histories (in the first case) and by conceptual maps (in the second and third cases) with their respective categories.

This study analyses whether the three-dimensional perspective isthe best way to assess the burnout syndrome in a pre-professional group of university students, as has been extensively proven for professional groups. We also assess whether this syndrome can be defined as the positive cumulative result of exhaustion and cynicism and the negative cumulativeresult of the lack of professional efficacy. In addition to the study of the relationship between burnout and its hypothetical opposite construct, engagement, the associated burnout and engagement scales are used to explain the level of commitment of this group towards their study. The psychosocial variables "intention to leaveu", "knowledge of the professional world" and "academic perjormance" are used to define the profile of committed students. Among the results of the study, based on a sample of 1.187 Business Management students (LADE) at the University of the Basque Country (UPV) the most interesting are: a) As in professional groups, pre-professional burnout can be defined as the positive cumulative result of exhaustion and cynicism and the negative cumulative result of the lack of professional efficacy; b) In a second-order factor structure, neither the three burnout scales nor the three engagement scales cluster together into one separate burnout and engagement factor; c) There are two clearly different groups of students: those who are committed to learning, and those who are not; d) The level of commitment varies according to professional maturity, intention to leave and time the s~dbject expects to take to finish their studies.

This study aims to examine the relationship between preschool children's ability to infer the mental states of others (referred to as Theory of Mind) and the type of communicative interactions they develop in referential commumications contexts. Specifically, the present investigation involved74 Spanish-speaking children aged between 3; 4 and 5;9. These children participated in two Theorly of Mind tasks: The Attribution of knowledge-ignorance task (Pillow, 1989; adapted by Welch-Ross, 1997) and the Understanding of False-belief task (Baron Cohen, Leslie & Frith, 1985; Núñez's version, 1993). In addition, the participants were pairedaccording to age and level of peijformance on the two tasks in order to participate in a referential communication task specifically designed for the present study. Communicative interactions between participants were videorecorded, transcribed and analysed using a coding system involvingthree dimensions: pragmatic functions, descriptive adequacy and message ambiguity. Results revealed significant differences in the types of communicative resources used by the children with different levels of Theoiy of Mind. In particular, the False-belief task was found to be strongly correlated with communicative skill. It is proposed that children who have different levels of social understanding with respect to mental life are likely to have different representations of the communicative process and thusmay utilise different strategies to guide social-communicative interactions in referential communication settings.

Research on child phonology tends to adopt formal models from linguistics, and to concentrate on the early stages. The present stzldy is an attempt to establish the later stages in the development of phonology, and to explain them from a psychological and pragmatic perspective based on the paradigm of phonological processes. We considered both phonematic and phonotactic processes, but we focused on consonant cluster reduction as the process that is most representative of late phonology. Spontaneous speech samples were recorded from 240 Spanish-speaking children (120 girls/l20 boys) divided into six age groups ranging from 3;O to 5;11 years. We obtained a large corpus of errors and codified them in terms of the corresponding processes. The results show a significant age-related decrease in the frequency of the processes. Three stages can be observed in the acquisition of phonology during the period studied: expansion, stabilization and resolution. Age four is a decisive milestone in the acquisition of phonology, as previous research in several languages has repeatedly pointed out. Our data strongly support universal trends in the acquisition of phonology, although it is accornplished through different individual paths. Analysis of the mechanisms underlying phonological processes provides a tentative explanation of phonological development in the context of emergent knowledge. Implications for articulation versus knowledgebased intervention in speech disorders are also discussed.

The development of the first verb forms in children's speech is currently under debate. Some researchers have proposed a rapid acquisition of morphology and syntax as a result of the general linguistic knowledge which is part of our innate endowment. Others have proposed a gradual and piecemeal knowledge for the first use of verbs and verbal structures,following the ccverb-island hypothesisu of Tomasello. This paper examines these issues in Spanish. Data from three monolingual Spanish children are analyzed. Children's ages are: from 1;3 to 2;6;fiom 1;8 to 2;l; and from 1 ;5 to 2;2. Our analysis showed gradual verbal learning for Spanish children,with a veiy restricted use of productive verb type forms. This suggests a piecemeal learning of verbs, [.e. Spanish children start to use verbs one by one, with very specific forms. We also found that Spanish-speaking children's early verb structures are based on limited, verb-specific knowledge.Finally, our results showed different patterns for each child.

This paper studies the initial development of certain language components. More precisely, we analyse the relation between three aspects that are closely involved in the grammar of the verb: morphological productivity, syntactic complexity, and verb vocabulary learning. The study is based on data about the relationship between lexical development and grammatical development, and also on proposals that a critical mass ofvocabulary is needed in order to develop a grammatical component. The sample comprised six subjects who are monolingual or bilingual in Catalan and/or Spanish. Results show a morphological spurt some time after the learning of a certain quantity of verbs. Moreover, syntactic complexity is only evident some months after this morphological spurt.

This paper explores the relations between the lexicon and the initial stage of the syntactic component. The main goal is tofind out ifthere is a covariation between the changes in the lexicon (when it reaches 400 words) together with the increase in grammatical words (closed class words), with morpheme inflection and changes in syntax measured in MLUw.The results show a linear increase in grammatical lexical items, but in all subjects there is a brief stage of fast non-monotonous increase when their lexicon comprises 400 words (or slightly before). It is confirmed that the evolution of both components (lexicon and syntax) is not linear, suggestinga reorganization of the initial syntactic component that is related to the size of the lexicon and the non monotonous increase of the closed class words.

There is a need to deterrnine early predictors of language development that rnay aid in the identijication of late-talkers. This study proposes gestural and vocabulary (both comprehension and production) components that rnay dzrerentiate children with typical language developmentfrom those who are delayed. A group of 10 children (age range 20-36 months ut first visit) with low language production were followed for a year and compared with control children of the same age. Data were collected using a parental report, experimental instruments and formal tests. Results showed specific gestural types and vocabulary measures that differentiated late talkers who bloomed from those who remained delayed ut the second visit.

Previous studies suggested that blind children tend to use a Gestalt or holistic style, instead of an analytic one, in their acquisition of language. The present paper compares the first grammatical constructions produced by three children with dlfferent degrees of vision. The three children were studied longitudinally from the age of 22 to 25 months. The firstchild was a totally blind girl, the second was a visually deficient boy, and the third was a girl with normal vision. The children lived in similar bilingual Spanish-Galician contexts, and all of them were bilingual. In order to analyse the children's productions, every multi-word utterance was classifiedas either a) frozen phrase, b) intermediate utterance, or c) constructed utterance, following the category system proposed by Pine and Lieven (Pine and Lieven, 1993; Lieven, Pine and Baldwin, 1997). The results show that the blind girl used a greater number offr-ozen phrases and fewerconstructed utterances than the other two children. The different developmental patterns found in the three children are considered as evidence of the existence of different styles of language learning. The features found are related to later grammar development.

Social support is a multidimensional construct with a range of functional and structural aspects. Several instruments for its assessment have been reported in the literature. All of them have been designed for specific samples with particular characteristics, which means that the nature of the muny questionnaires published varies widely. The aim of this study isto review some of the instruments used to evaluate social support. We analysed 22 questionnaires, classifying them according to the dimensions proposed by Tardy (1 985), and describing their psychometric properties. Our review showed that these instruments assessed different aspects of theconshuct. The dimensions of social evaluation are operationalized in different ways; therefore it is difficult to standardize evaluation criteria and to compare the outcome of social support or its effect on health.

The principal aim of the investigation that is presented in this article is to analyze some characteristics of the construction process of teachers' professional knowledge of learning strategies. For this reason, empirical information has been collected from the teaching and learning process. This process starts with the design of a course of continua1 training for teachers, followed by the development of a didactic sequence, and ending with the application in the teaching practice of the knowledge acquired by six teachers. The results should be interpreted as the beginning of a future articulation of a psychological model of teacher training coherent with professional environment. From this model we can understand the epistemological construction of professional knowledge.

This paper examines our understanding of private speech - speech that is not addressed or adapted to the interlocutor - from a Vygotskian perspective. The progressive acquisition of the planning function made possible by the interiorisation of language deserves special attention. Social and private speech is analysed longitudinally in ten pairs of children ut the ages of 4;6 and 6;6, in a play context. The results are relevant in two aspects. First, only ludic-emotional private speech (speech related to fantasy, play, or expressions of affect) decreases significantly with age, whereas planning private speech (describing actions directed to a goal)remains constant ut both ages. Second, a sequential analysis reveals that social speech categories, which are related to the expression of divergent perspectives, increase the probability that the partner will answer in a private manner. Therefore, the emergence of private speech seems to berelated not only to the difficulty of the task but also to communicative conflict.

From a sociohistorical point of view, we stress that children acquire language through involvement in verbal interaction and in joint activity with other more competent language users. The goal of this paper is to compare the educational strategies used by mothers of young children with Down Syndrome in their linguistic interactions with their children, and those used by the therapist during a period of language intervention. Muny significant differences were found. Compared with the strategies used by the therapist, the strategies used by the mothers could not be considered optimal for language development. The optimal difference between the language the therapist addresses to the children and the complexity of their utterances enhances their inorphosyntactic development.

The study analysed the perceptions of adult grandchildren (university students) of their interactions with their grandparents. A semi-structured interview was administered to the sample, containing questions referring to shared activities before and after they entered university, mutual teaching and learning in the past and present, and the role played by grandparents in family conflicts. The results show that: the start of university studies reduced the number of activities involving grandchildren and grandparents; there is a perception that the mutual teaching and learning has been more fruitjiul with maternal than with paternal grandparents; and that the main role of grandparents in family conflicts is non-interference. These results are discussed in relation to the literature on grandparenthood.
