Neorealism, History, and The Children’s Film: Vittorio de Sica’s The Children Are Watching Us reconsidered
Cardullo, Bert
Vittorio De Sica used a child protagonist for the first time, not in his neorealist masterpiece Shoeshine (1946), but in his first truly serious film, The Children Are Watching Us (1943), which examines the impact on a young boy’s life of his mother’s extramarital affair with a family friend. The Children Are Watching Us proved to be a key work, thematically as well as stylistically, in De Sica’s directing career. In its thematic attempt to reveal the underside of Italy’s moral life, this film was indicative of a rising new vision in Italian cinema. And in exhibiting semi-documentary qualities by being shot partially on location, as well as by using nonprofessional actors in some roles, The Children Are Watching Us was a precursor of the neorealism that would issue forth after the liberation of occupied Rome.

Walker: the dramatic film as historical truth .
Rosenstone, Robert, A.
Among academic historians there is a general, if largely unarticulated, feeling that historical works done on film, particularly dramatized history, can never be as worth wile or as "true" as historical works done on the printed page*. Such a notion seems to arise from a sense that words are able to provide a serious and literal past reality that film, with its supposed need to entertain people, can never hope to match. To combat such a shortsighted view of the possibilities of history on film, I want to show the ways in which a single historical film can create a past that is at once complex, important, challenging, and "true". My point: to see that one film can make a contribution to historical discourse is to admit that the visual media can be used seriously by those who wish to create and understand the meaning of the past.

Estudiar un film en el aula: To Be or not To Be (1942)

The Image of Mexican Heroes in American Films
Vanderwood, Paul J.
As historical recreations of Mexican history, the motion pictures Juárez (1939) and Viva Zapata! (1952) can undoubtedly be faulted. Although some have argued that they capture the spirit or the essence of the dramas they depict, factual errors, as we presently seem to understand those facts, are obvious in each film, as is a misplaced overall emphasis which endows these Mexican heroes with characteristics and motives they hardly possessed. But such criticism comes easy and misses the point. The movies were never intended as near-factual historical representations. Juárez and Zapata were instead deliberately tailored to fit contemporary concerns in United States society and the movie industry itself, thereby making each film a fascinating document for the study of that period in which they were produced.

HOLLAND: THE SECOND WORLD WAR AND THE IMAGE OF OCCUPATION. WITH A COMPARISON OF BRITAIN
Barnouw, David
Netherlands State Institute for War Documentation (Amsterdam)
In Holland we love the war. And by war we always mean the Second World War. Since Napoleon, it was the first time that foreign troops invaded the Netherlands and that is perhaps one of the reasons why this war is so important for us. Not only as part of our history, but as part of our society, as part of our existence.

REPROACHLESS HEROES OF WORLD WAR 11: A CINEMATIC APPROACH THROUGH TWO AMERICAN MOVIES
Diligenti-Ga Vriline, Christine S.
Lycee Ozar Hatorah (Toulouse)
As a manly universe, war is above all a soldierly one, the one of fighting armies. Cinema does not derogate to the tradition of representing troops, resting or acting, clean and fresh on the eve of the battle, mud bespattered and devastated afterwards.

BETWEEN SILENCE AND ABJECTION: THE FILM MEDIUM AND THE ISRAELI WAR WIDOW
Mihal Friedman, Regine
University ofTel Aviv
The Israeli cinema has been characterised these last few years by a dual phenomenon which it would seem difficult not to link with traumatic events such as the war in Lebanon and the I ntifada. On the one hand, a series of films have finally dared to tackle an obsessive problem, one which, as will be shown, had previously been suggested metaphorically. Don't give a damn (S. Himbennan, 1987), Shell Shock (Y. Sharon,l988),BellRoom(A.Gutman,l988),andBurningMemories(Y.Somer,1989) show young soldiers affected in their physical integrity, wounded in their virility. On the other hand, the triumphal revival of sketches and comedies produced over twenty years ago by Uri Zohar1 has demonstrated the nostalgia that the younger generations sustain towards a paradise lost of innocence and lack of responsibility.

INCIDENCIA DEL CINE DE FICCION ESTADOUNIDENSE EN LAS MENTALIDADES DURANTE LA II GUERRA MUNDIAL
Quiroga, Luis M.

When Ronald Reagan began his motion picture career in 1937 he entered a world in which entertainment and politics were joined. Behind Hollywood facade of a «never-never land of sunny skies, Sleeping Beauties, and ivory towers,» populated by political innocents, lay a serious side. Producers and writers as well as actors and actresses began to take sides on a variety of international and national issues.

FIGHTING JUVENILE PREJUDICE IN FILM: THE MAKING OF HOUSE I LIVE IN
Wiseman, John B.
Frostburg State University, Maryland
At a working Hollywood dinner party held shortly before the surrender of the German armies in early May 1945, four progressives brainstormed about making a movie short for young Americans on the democratic significance of the war while its lessons were still timely. One of the reformers present that evening was Frank Sinatra, the bobbysocks singing idol who also spent the war years giving Four Freedom talks to his teenage fans. The other three were Frank Ross, an RKO producer with humanitarian sentiments, Albert Maltz, a screenwriter with unreconstructed Marxist views, and Mervyn LeRoy, a veteran director of social problem films that had inspired Sinatra as a boy.

The Documentary Film in World War II
Pronay, Nicholas
University of Leeds
The Second World War now lies half a century behind us in time. Thevictorious ending of the Cold War completed the 'unfinished business' aspects of theSecond World War, as a war against the challenge of totalitarianism whether of the rightor of the left, as well as has now put an historical epoch between us and World War 11.In every sense now, therefore, the Second World War is history. So is the Documentaryfilm. As a genre, the Documentary has indeed survived, and became, in an adapted form, a staple of television viewing.

Documenting Vietnam: Television War and the Representation of Physical Experience

Institut filrAmerikastudien, Frankfurt
«No man can act before the camera in the face of death». This statement by EmestHemingway does not only claim authority for the images from the Spanish Civil war ofJoris lvens' Spanish Earth (1937). The decidedly dry and restrained diction ofHemingway's performance as author and speaker of this Voice of God was not onlymuch admired for its difference to contemporary newsreel and documentary practicewhen the film was released in the US; its very factual mode of presentation also transports Hemingway' s assertions to a level of universal and pragmatic truth about an essential affinity of documentary modes of representation the mise en scene of military combat.

The Fascist Empire: From War to Film

When from Eritrea and Somalia, Fascist Italy invaded the thousand year old Ethiopian Empire- ruled by Emperor Haile Selassie- I was a child, a six year old child. It was on October 1935. As a second grade pupil of the elementary school, I remember the heavy propaganda with which the Fascist school authorities subjected us in order to persuade us that what Mussolini had decided to conquer was certainly an advantage for Italy and that, in any case, Italy was committed to follow in the tracks of the ancient Romans, to restore the old Roman Empire all around the Mediterranean Sea and into Africa.

Schiffer-Ekhart, Armgard
Steiermiirkisches Landesmuseum Joanne urn, Graz
In 1984 the PHOTO and SOUNDARCHIV of the museum in Graz I Styria organised an exhibition about the FIRST WORLD WAR, and therefore our collection of documentation material about this event is comparatively extensive. Though the collection is restricted to material from the region of Styria only, we have got an insight of the way ofW AR-DOKUMENT ATION at this time. I have brought some catalogues of this exhibition with me, in case that somebody should be interested in this.

American Newsreels in World War II: Entertainment, News and Pro-British Propaganda in 1941-42
M. Short, K. R.
School of Communications University of Houston, Texas
The most visible and best recalled media ofthe Second World War, regardless of nationality, are the newsreels. These very same newsreels, while essential for our visual recollection of that war, have been largely ignored by historians, except for mining them for documentary television. Interestingly, much of the early interest in history and film centred upon the newsreels as historical sources and, as late as 1975, feature films had yet to be probed for their own significant contribution.

Style in Swiss Newsreels 1940-45
Gerdes, Peter
University of New South Wales, Australia
There exists an unique word in the German language, particularly as it is spoken and written in Switzerland: «Heimatstil», «Heimat style». The word «Heimat» is not translatable. It means something akin to «fatherland» or «motherland» but implies much more and is full of emotional overtones, if not outright sentimentalism. It implies mountains, the rustic life, the back-to-earth syndrome. «Heimatstil» indicates a style stemming from the basic and morally solid pleasures in life: carved furniture made from native fir -trees, highly decorated traditional costumes, the classical chalet and yodelling. «Heimat» and anything that goes with it is particular! y called upon - and popular- during moments of crisis. It helps to mentally strengthen the readiness for national resistance, Switzerland likes to promote the reflection on «Heimat» which, according to Paul Nizon, «expresses itself with preference in any form of 'Heimatstil '»1 • It is worthwhile noting that Germany and Austria know of the «Heimatstil» as well but not so France or Italy.

The Making of Kokoda Front Line
McDonald, Neil
Charles Sturt University, Australia
Cinesound's Kokoda Front Line is undoubtedly the most famous newsreel made in Australia during the Second World War. The film won an Academy Award and made its cameraman, Damien Parer, a national hero. Despite lines like «the black skinned boys are white», which makes Kokoda Front Line producer Ken G. Hall wince whenever he hears it these days, I think we can all agree that the newsreel is brilliant propaganda.

War on Television: Lessons for and from the Golf War
Taylor, Philip M.
University of Leeds
One year on - from the weather and the sea you would never guess that anything had happened'. Such was Christopher Bellamy's recent observation from aboard HMS Sheffield for The Independent about the ecological condition of the waters of the Persian Gulf a year after Operation Desert Storm1 • Considering the high media profile afforded to oil-smeared cormorants on glooming Saudi beaches, to blazing Kuwaiti oil-wells and to what was portrayed at the time as an ecological disaster of almost apocalyptic proportions, such an observation merely highlights the degree to which television audiences worldwide were bombarded with propaganda during the GulfWarof 1991.

Absolved by History: On the Aesthetics and Ideology of History in the Cuban Film Institute
Mraz, John
Universidad Autónoma de Puebla
History has been a central pillar in the ideological project of the Cuban Film Institute throughout its existence.1 Three months after the triumph of the revolution on January 1, 1959, the first cultural act of the new government was to create ICAIC (Instituto Cubano de Arte e Industria Cinematográficos). The law founding the film institute asserted -in its only reference to subject matter or genre forms -that, “Our history is a veritable goldmine of themes and heroes capable of cinematic incarnation, which will serve as a fountain of revolutionary inspiration, culture, and information.” 2 . Twenty years later, a long essay celebrated ICAIC’s anniversary by extolling the various interconnections of film and history , and concluded that the latter was the emotional well-spring of Cuban cinema.3 Shortly before the 20thanniversary , the greatest of the Cuban directors, Tomás Gutiérrez Alea summed up the priority accorded history in the film institute by stating. “Every foot of film we shoot is marked, in the final instance, by a concern with history.

Social Roles / Political Responsibilities: Jean Renoir's Search for Artistic Integrity, 1928-1939
Musser, Charles
Throughout his life, Jean Renoir-the son of a renowned painter, a onetime potter, and filmmaker -was preoccupied with the role of the artist in society. What was the artist's place in, and his/her responsibilities to, the world (but particularly to France)? Under what conditions could an artist function and do meaningful work-not only meaningful for society but for him/herself? These were ethical, moral, and political questions with which Renoir wrestled, finding no easy answers, no simple verities. Rather he was often troubled by the relationship between artist and society which he understood as a dynamic one in need of constant reconsideration.

La I Guerra Mundial Y El Auge Del Cine Catalan: Un Estudio De «Barcinógrafo» Y De Magi Muria

«We' re just little people, Louis» : Marie-Antoinette on Film
Mason, Laura
Universidad de Georgia
In 1938, with much fanfare and advance notice, MGM released the lavish costume drama, Marie-Antoinette. Designed as a star vehicle for Norma Shearer, one of the most popular Hollywood actresses of the decade, the film's supporting cast included matinee idol Tyrone Power as MarieAntoinette' s supposed lover, Count Axel von Fersen, the ageing Shakespearean actor John Barrymore as an ageing Louis XV, and Robert Morley as a singularly befuddled and inept Louis XVI. Although MGM executives mismanaged the film' s production, they promoted an energetic ad campaign for the finished product and arranged for Shearer to reprise her role on the «Maxwell House Coffee Radio Hour.» In the end, Marie-Antoinette achieved only moderate commercial success but it met with a generally favourable critical reaction. Praised by the New York Herald Tribune as «the most sumptuous historical spectacle of the year ,» it was named one of the ten best movies of 1938 by Film Daily and was nominated for four Academy Awards.

The Historical Film as Real History
Rosenstone, Robert A.
Let's face the facts and admit it: historical films trouble and disturb (most) professional historians. Why? We all know the obvious answers. Because, historians will say, films are inaccurate. They distort the past. They fictionalize, trivialize, and romanticize important people, events, and movements. They falsify History.

Against the Ivory Tower: An Apologia for "Popular" Historical Documentaries
Eitzen, Dirk
Studies at Franklin & Marshall in Lancaster, Pennsylvania, USA.
What makes a documentary good? What makes one bad? These two little questions account for probably eighty-five percent of the ink that has flowed in discussion of documentaries in general and historical documentaries in particular-both in academic circles and in the popular press. These questions continue to provoke strong disagreements. It is a safe bet that they are in no danger of a speedy resolution. Nonetheless, when it comes to the practical matter of doing things with historical documentaries -using them in the classroom, at conferences, in our writing- they are questions that insist upon answers. I do not have any all-purpose answers. I would like to make a case, however, concerning how we ought to approach the questions

Filming the «Discovery» of America: How and Whose History Is Being Told
Alvaray, Luisela
School of Arts at the Universidad Central de Venezuela
At that moment, it was Rodrigo de Triana who shouted «Tierra! tierra!...» meaning that land could be seen on the horizon., That cry signaled the beginning of a continuous enterprise carried out through a period that from then on has been called the Discovery and Conquest of America. The shaping of this endeavor has relied upon innumerable chronicles narrated then by both priests and conquistadores of the time. Beyond the written accounts later summarized by historians, there have been a considerable number of films related to this epoch.l My attraction to these kinds of films shares two sets of questions certainly not unrelated. First, a theoretical inquiry connected to the controversial existence of film representations of History- to their validity as historical accounts- which will necessarily take me to the more general question of the conception of History itself: Are historical representations different from other discourses? Can they be connected to certain film styles? My second set of questions are ideological and connected to the actual signification conveyed through the films that will inform this analysis: Whose histories are being told and from whose point of view? Tracing out and mapping these questions will be the main purpose of this treacherous journey.

Film as Historical Narrative
Salmi, Hannu

The Polish cinematographer Boleslaw Matuszewski who worked with the famous film pioneers, the Lumiere brothers during the 1890s published a little booklet Une nouvelle source de l’histoire (The New Source of History) in the year 1898. In this text, he suggested that film could offer not only a source for historical research but a suitable medium for historical narration as well.

The Politics of the Trilogy Form: Lucía, the Oresteia and The Godfather
Rose, Peter W.
University at Oxford (Ohio, USA)
I recall years ago reading an interview with Bertold Brecht in which the interviewer asked Brecht whether he thought his work would be read in a hundred years. Brecht’s reply was something like, “That depends who wins.” At an historical moment when the apparently triumphant voices of self-appointed pundits and mysteriously funded “think-tanks” are proclaiming both the cultura and political failure of the Cuban Revolution, I think it is appropriate to recall one of the true masterpieces created by the Cuban Revolution, the film Lucía. I speak of the film as “created by the revolution” not in any disparagement of the extraordinary contributions of the director Humberto Solás and his collaborators, but because -as I hope will become clear from my analysis- I believe that many of the film’s most striking formal features are unimaginable outside the context of a successful revolution.

Franco and the filmmakers: critical myths, transparent realities
Pingree, Geoffrey B.
University of Chicago
Like so many contested pasts, the history of Spain in the twentieth century has often been presented in binary terms.0 Torn apart by a brutal civil war, then subject to nearly forty years of dictatorial rule, Spain offers those who , seek to analyze her a facile opportunity to divide cleanly the good from the evil. As cultural historian R. A. Stradling has argued, «much writing about the Spanish Civil War is concerned to defend what might be called the ‘mutual hegemony’ of two opposed myths,» a phenomenon «evident right across the spectrum of reportage..., source material, and... professional historiografy...»

Frank Nugent's The New York Times review of Drums Along the Mohawk (Twentieth CenturyFox) did not provide an answer to his implied question. Why had Hollywood largely avoided the period between 1776 and 1783? Excepting The Last of the Mohicans (1936) starring Randolph Scott and a matinee serial of the same name, the pre-1776 colonial period was also largely missing from American screens.

Americans who care about their past should stand up and cheer for Oliver Stone. Certainly no other filmmaker in Hollywood is able to get the public so involved in open debates about history -its facts, its meanings, its modes of representation, its value in our lives. With Salvador he confronted the generally buried issue of American interventions into Central America; with Platoon and Born on the Fourth of July, he raised questions about the wisdom and morality of the Vietnam War; with JFK he suggested the possibility of conspiracy at the highest levels of the government of the United States.

Spain and the United States: a cinematic relationship, 1939-1953

Universitat de Barcelona (UB)
When the Spanish Civil War ended, the political and ideological atmosphere of Spain changed a lot: for the new regime, democracy and freedom were synonimous with the «decadent and corrupt» republican years. The triumph of Franco's Army was due in great part to the support of Germany and Italy, and this inevitably led to a preponderance of the Fascist ideas represented by the Falange party. In fact, Franco was never a real Fascist, but at this moment he considered unavoidable to adopt a sympathetic attitude towards this ideology.
