Sexuación: la no identidad del sexo (Much Ado about Nothing)
Sexuation
Berenguer, Enric
This article examines the consequences of the deconstruction of master signifiers in contemporary cultural and social discourses. The fact that these signifiers have been dismantled has had as a consequence the explosion of multiple forms of identification attached to also multiple ways of emjouissance/em which vindicate their right to their own way of emjouissance/em. As opposed to modern identity discourses, psychoanalysis observes that emjouissance/em is particular to every subject.

From de Blank Page
Bassols, Miquel
In this article the author takes the short story by Isak Dinesen ldquo; The Blank Pagerdquo; as an enacting of the feminine position in relation to sexual difference and the logics of Not-All developed by the psychoanalytical discourse of Jacques Lacan. This position is situated beyond the phallic logic in the unspeakable blank between the letters. The Freudian uncounscious is signified in an exemplary way in the blank page in front of which the subject stands still.

H. Cixous does not identify “Woman” with biological sex, not even with one gender, but with the “capacity to embrace the other”. So the writing which is open to alterity is “feminine”, even if the author is a man, because “a man-that-writes” is no longer a man, according to Cixous. However, Cixous led feminist literary theory, from 1975 onwards, to ponder the relationship between writing and the body, without using the sexual categories of man/woman. Taking Cixous's “Contes de la différence sexuelle” as a starting point, M. Negrón describes Cixous’s “writing in movement” as that which aims at an impossible objective, “photographing the perfume”, that is, exploring interiority, describing what cannot be described, saying what cannot be said.

Calle-Gruber, Mireille
Looking at two texts by H. Cixous, Portrait de Dora (a play where Cixous re-writes Freud’s “Dora case” and gives voice to a young woman silenced by the institutional psychoanalytic discourse and Le troisième corps (itself a rewriting of Jensen’s Gradiva and Freud’s text about this play), this article shows the particular mechanisms of reading and (re)writing in h. Cixous. Going beyond intertextuality, cixous combines the signifiers to make “the unexpected” appear in her own text, following the principle of “reading-writing” as two simultaneous and complementary activities. So her writing inaugurates a new narrative genre, which advances metaphors, without any argumental pretext. Moreover, her autobiographical writing includes mythical and biblical passages that constitute her own “myths of the origin”.

"Gender Nation": Split Reason Freedom
Ivekovic, Rada

Orozco, Teresa
Following the terrorist attacks of September 11, cultural supplements of the most read newspapers in Germany, as well as new publications on that subject, quoted the geopolitical concepts and points of view gathered in the works of the Nazi jurist Carl Schmitt (1888-1985). The author of this article shows how this discourse –which points out to the emergence of new transgressive political agents- articulates, certainly in a non explicit way, the preoccupation with Western constructed masculinities, which were considered as endangered. In these responses the idea of a masculinity capable of defending a new world order is rehabilitated in the name of “liberty” of “the Western world” and of “mankind”. This idea of masculinity conveys not only a fascist past, but also a fascination with submission and the use of violence against the civil standards of the rule of law. Finally, this analysis shows how, in the present construction of a new world order, what is at stake is the struggle for a new hegemonic masculinity, pointing out as well the high price of the exclusions that it exercises.

The Vertigo of Secularization: the innovative Notion of Political Authority

Sexual equality has not yet been achieved in our Western societies, neither by means of the acknowledgement of women’s rights nor by means of the development of so called “anti-discriminatory” laws. Moreover, the poverty threshold for women and children, as well as domestic violence against them, seem to be gradually increasing. However, and despite its limitations, the ethical idea of a universal justice –or “global”, according to the contemporary terminology– still has a role to play as a “regulative idea” not only in the philosophical discourses, but also in social, legal and political contexts. This is a challenge on which feminism puts at stake its best theoretical knowledge as well as its practical survival.

Through these notes, Victoria Sau thinks about the concept of "exclusion" and explores the consequences of sexual discrimination where, in her opinion, lies the origin of all other discriminations: the exclusion of women at the beginning of the long chain of exclusions of humankind. By excluding the mother (matricide) as the origin of the feminine, motherless daughters of all times –Sau points out- never ceased to be a threat for the patriarchal order.

Moderata Fonte y María Zambrano: por cuenta propia
Rius Gatell, Rosa
In this paper, Rosa Rius thinks about feminine identity and its history, based on the expressions of freedom of two authors living four centuries apart: the Venetian humanist Moderata Fonte (1555-1592) and the Malagan philosopher María Zambrano (1904-1991). The fact that these women’s freedom is taken as one of their main identifying elements, and straining the historical action of this freedom, unforeseen by the establishment, does not at all imply that the undeniable discrimination inflicted upon women throughout centuries is forgotten or goes on without protest.

Notes sobre subjectivitat i experiència
Birulés, Fina
The aim of this paper is to underline the fact that, in most contemporary philosophical debates (and somehow, issues in feminist theory are not an exception), a well-known term is playing an important role: experience. We need a cartography of the uses ofexperience, if we want to know what we are talking about and also if we intend to analyze and to rethink the last 25 years of “women studies”, “gender studies” or “subaltern studies”.

Hechos sin literatura
Negrón, Mara
From a deconstructionist point of view, literature is a kind of passion for saying everything. This freedom of speech which is the essence of literature constitutes the very idea of democracy, as well as the fictions entailed in this concept. Due to its passion for creation and imagination, literature has been the target of all kinds of censorship. Not in the same way as a “responsible” agent, but as something that always acts as a “witness”. From this perspective, I analyze La hora de la estrella (1977), by the Brazilian writer Clarice Lispector. This work reflects on a certain boundary of literature, establishing some kind of relationship between passion and the problem of sexual difference. A sentence of the male “author” of the novel captures the extraordinary complexity of Clarice Lispector’s thought: “Suddenly, I developed a passionate interest in facts without literature”. I’m interested in thinking about the passion of an inside of literature but without literature, as well as its relationshp with the political field.

Una cuestión de lenguaje
Maillard, Chantal
A maternal thinking is the one which gives us the possibility of acting and conceiving at the same time; it is a double conception produced within thinking and matter, because where love germinates there is no difference between matter and what, like a mirror, gives us an account of it. When being, loving and thinking are different things, we talk about justice where we should talk about humanity, and we talk about tolerance where we should talk about respect. At the same time, we educate our children in the exercise of their own and of distributive ethics. When we consider that love and thought are two different things it is not difficult to believe that wars, occupations, rapes, and all kind of attacks on the freedom of all of us have some kind of legitimacy. However, is it possible to dissociate ethical behaviour from love?

Unmasking the Gaze: Some Thoughts on New Feminist Film Theory and History
Mulvey, Laura

Bergstrom, Janet
Palazón (trad.), Manuel
This article studies the cinematographic career of Chantal Akerman by placing it within the feminist context of the seventies. In fact,Jeanne Dielman, for instance, was described by Le Monde (January 1976) as “the first masterpiece in the feminine in the history of the representational status of a woman –her desire, her self-image, the image that others create of and for her. Her films have provided different answers to the question “who speaks?”, when the female voice/image is analysed. It is precisely as a question that this feminist film theory, as any definitive answer will always be simplistic. Akerman has shown, in a nondidactic manner, the fragile representational status of “woman” (daughter, mother, etc.) once it is removed from conventional cinematographic usage. Were these questions, so urgently posed during the seventies in women’s films and feminist theory, ever answered? Probably not, despite different attempts to remove “woman’s discourse” or “woman’s voice” from the discussion field, as these questions seem to be posed again by a new generation.

Millán argues that Mexican women's cinema of the eighties is similar to the rest of Latin-American cinema in that it also shows a movement towards interiority. She suggests that this movement is seen, for instance, in the films of Marisa Sistach, Busi Cortés and María Novaro. The main aims behind this interiorization are coming to terms with the past (with the past in images, with the past in the history of the country), the acknowledgement of one’s own sensitivity (romanticism recovered in a feminist way), and the emergence of magic realism as denaturalization of women’s world, as a way of making representation visible. Millán suggests that this interiorization runs the risk of neglecting one’s social and historical realities. However, she goes on to suggest that this process of interiorization may perhaps be an essential initial step before denouncing women’s social and historical oppresion.

Barbara Stanwyck's Anklet
Rabinowitz, Paula

Mirizio, Annalisa
In this article, first published in Italian in the journal Tuttilibri (March-May 2000), Teresa De Lauretis suggests how in a number of films made in the 90s, such as Heavenly Creatures and Accomplices –there emerges a representation of homosexuality, especially feminine, removed from the repressive moralism of previous productions. However, despite the differences and the presence in these films of female subjects, there also emerges a love-and-death imagery that joins sexuality and aggressive pulsions

"People Believe What They See": Clothing and Gender(s) in Victor/Victoria

Croubalian, Melanie
de la Rosa (trad.), Elena
Love has always played a central role in Arab cultures, whether idealized/Platonic (as in the story of Majnûn and Laylâ) or earthly/carnal (as in the well-known Dove Ring. About Affinity and Friends by Ibn Hazm al-Andalûsî [993-1064]). Today love is still dealt with by many Arab philosophers and poets, especially Egyptian. This article intends to show the ways in which love has been represented in Egyptian cinema during the last fifty years, through four different categories of love: physical love, Platonic love, fatherly love and love between husband and wife. This essay demonstrates that contemporary Egypt’s conceptions of love are still very much the same as in the classical era, though contemporary cinema adds the support of the moving image to our understanding of this feeling.

The article discusses the figure of the British scientist Robert Boyle as the construction of the modern image of scientific authority and objectivity through social and literary technologies that systematically exclude nonhegemonic groups (women, colored people). The paper argues that the figure of the self-invisible modest witness in technoscientific discourse should be queered in order to enable a more corporeal and situated form of knowledge.

New Flesh and Remake: The Cat People
Pedraza, Pilar
This text examines the character of the cat-woman in Jacques Tourneur's Cat People (1942) and Paul Schrader's remake of the same title (1981), within the frame of the contemporary evolution of the sinister and its body representations, like David Cronenberg's "New Flesh". The paper analyses both the difference between both versions of the film as well as the ideological implication of its plot and characters, arguing that Schrader's version is actually more conservative in its gender representations than the 1942 movie.

La mirada transgenérica
The Transgender Look
Halberstam, Judith
Torras, Meri
This text studies the construction and development of the transgender look in contemporary queer cinema, specifically: The Crying Game (Neil Jordan, 1992), Boys don't Cry (Kimberly Peirce, 2000) and By Hook or by Crook (Harry Dodge and Silas Howard, 2001). The analysis examines carefully the constitution of a meaningful materiality of the body through the gaze and the dialogue-confrontation between the transgender look and mainstream cinema's gaze, in its capability to regulate pleasures and sexual identities.

Body and Transgression. Cindy Sherman and the Photographic Vision of Human Mutation
Adrián Escudero, Jesús
This text focuses on the issue of human mutation within the frame of contemporary feminist aesthetics through the analysis of Cindy Sherman‚s photographic series Disastres (1986-1989) and Sex Pictures (1992). This work denounces harshly the gradual de-humanization of industrial society and questions obsolete socially established identity patterns. The theoretical discussion of Sherman‚s pieces is based on Judith Butler‚s concept of "perfomativity" and Donna Haraway's idea of the cyborg. The paper seeks a reformulation, within the context of the new technological media used in contemporary artistic practices, of the waning borders between real and virtual bodies of women and men, gays and lesbians, transvestites and transexuals. In other words, the text seeks to explain the deep transformation that affects the very concept of human.

The Cyberfeminist Fantasy of the Pleasure of the Cyborg
Volkart, Yvonne
Clúa Ginés, Isabel
Cyberfeminism has provided us with a new point of view about technology and new political images related to it. These images work as "foundational myths" for all the people engaged in cyberfeminism. This paper, depicting the "grounding of foundational myths" as something crucial, describes a few female characters performing in different contemporary new media projects and embeds them in their theoretical and literary contexts. The focus lies on the content and meaning of the figurations rather than on technological and medial aspects of the art work. Given the fact that the term cyberfeminism is a highly speculative and mythic term with a vague and blurry meaning and an infectious circulation, the examination of aspects of pleasure of the cyborg is conducted within contexts which are not always directly acknowledged by the various protagonists (authors, theorists, artists, programmers, netizens) as strictly cyberfeminist.

The Fraternity of Post-human Bodies. Science-Fiction as a Space of Reproduction and Resistance to Traditional Masculine Imagery"
Ruido, María
This paper analyses the representations of the body present in contemporary science-fiction literature and film. Using theoretical concepts by Althusser, Foucault and Haraway, the text establishes first a typology of cybernetic organisms in contemporary culture and reviews its presence and ideological implications in films like Robocop (1987), Johny Mnemonic (1995) or Matrix (1999). The paper argues for a self-conscience as political and historical subjects in order to avoid falling into a fallacious cyberandroginy that reinfornces phallogocentric power structures.

Cuando Frankenstein encontró a Dorian Gray: dandysmo, post-identidad y sujetos virtuales
When Frankenstein Met Dorian Gray: Dandysm, Postidentity and Virtual Subjects
Clúa Ginés, Isabel
The appearence and popularization of the Internet has created new forms of writing, that compel us to think anew about identity and subjectivity. Webjournals or blogs are specially interesting because they are a massive phenomenon that uses autobiographical writing in a peculiar way. These forms of writing stress a traditional paradox of the genre: the coexistence between a purpose of private, confessional and spontaneous writing and a public image, carefully built, as a result of its writing. The technology is new, but, in fact, the paradox is old. This paper tries to explore this old paradox, our eternal condition of cyborgs, our use of technologies in order to construct a public, unique and recognizable identity. In order to do so, I will try to show the virtual condition of any written individual "this issue has already been dealt with by autobiographical studies", focusing on blogs, and especially on concrete example (Lord Whimsy's Journal). I will pay attention to gender as a technology that constructs identity and, at the same time, is deconstructed by the autobiographical narratives analyzed. In short, I attempt to show that virtual and autobiographical discourse do not bring forth a new kind of subject but the permanence of an old phenomenon "clearly developed by dandyism, for instance": the use of technologies to re-invent, re-formulate and re-construct us as multiple, hybrid and mixed subjects.

La (in)vestidura de los cuerpos
(In)vesting Bodies
Reverter Bañón, Sonia
The text reviews different approaches to the analysis of the discursive construction of the body by power practices. From the late Michel Foucault‚s "technologies of the self" to Judith Butler's performativity, the paper describes the dynamic relationship between the hegemonic and subversive discourses that act upon the body, both as object of regulation and as subject of resistance. The ideological implications of technological practices such as plastic surgery are discussed in the context of inter-sex identities and the medical responses to "sexual dimorfism".

¿Dónde está el feminismo en el ciberfeminismo?
Where is Feminism in Cyberfeminism?
Wilding, Faith
This paper reflects on the significance of the discussions that took place during the First Cyberfeminist International (Kassel, Germany, September 20-28, 1997) and their implications both for the attempts to define, and the arguments against defining, cyberfeminism. The text tackles the question of how to define (or avoid to define) "cyberfeminism" in the context of its relationship with the history of past feminist thinking and practices. The paper calls for a closer contact with the history of feminism in order both to avoid past mistakes and also appeal to wider groups of women in the technological circuit. The anti-theoretical attitude of movements like Cybergrrl-ism or different kinds of net utopianism actually undermines its potential to challenge the patriarchal status quo. A conscious attitude of selfdefinition can help the forming cyberfeminism to establish a crucial solidarity with transnational feminist and postcolonial initiatives in order to be able to exert an effective political action.

Cap a l'ordre simbòlic femení: La passió segons Renée Vivien
Towards a Feminine Symbolic Order: La passió segons Renée Vivien
Julià, Lluïsa
This article is an interpretation of the novel which Maria-Mercè Marçal published in 1994. It highlights the main elements of the feminine symbolic space constructed out of her own sexuality and declared as different from the masculine one, taking the mythical, symbolical and real character of Renée Vivien as a starting point. Around this figment of imagination the feminine past is brought to mind and a possible future is worked out, a historical and literary universe which allows us to talk about women –with a paricular emphasis placed on the woman artist– from a complete perspective. Some referents which stand out in the novel out of her own imaginary, reproduced and created by the author, are described. In this respect, the writer's intellectual, poetic and ironical response in the cultural debate which women´s creativity continues to assume is stressed, and a few keys to the respect are given.

La passió segons Renée Vivien and The Mirage- Miracle of the Mirror
Cabré, Rosa
In this article, Rosa Cabré discusses Marçal´s novel and illustrates how, according to the author, the desire of love, which is a source of pleasure often accompanied by guilt and distress, can lead to the creation or the illusion of an absolute beauty, like poetry. She explains in what way the mirror and the mask, recurring motifs in Marçal´s work, symbolise identity and “otherness” and how these unite the real and the symbolic level. The novel contains an infinite number of mirrors, both external and internal ones, which enable the characters to see themselves reflected. This reflection is linked to feminity and to the possibilities of discovering ones own identity.

Domesticacions, domesticitats i altres qüestions de gènere
Domestications, Domesticities and Other Gender Matters
Sabadell-Nieto, Joana
This article uses Lyotard’s theory linking the origins of thinking with desire and with the existence of a sexually- differentiated body to examine Maria-Mercè Marçal’s poem, “El meu amor sense casa,” as a “lyrical practice of feminism and difference, a writing of the body.” From this perspective, it pays attention to Marçal’s poetry as an inscription of sexual difference in language and literary practices, transforming them, destabilizing them and turning them into thinking tools for all. The central figure of the home or domus in the poem embodies the binary ambiguities that are largely undone by the appropriation of a hegemonic discourse by a body that is generically and sexually “different.” Marçal’s poem thus provides an architectural genealogy of a poetic subject that thinks in a body that is both female and lesbian.

Subversió, transició, tradició: política i subjectivitat a la primera poesia de Maria-Mercè Marçal
Subversion, Transition, Tradition: Politics and Subjectivity in the First Poetry of Maria-Mercè Marçal
Fernàndez, Josep-Anton
In this article, Fernàndez talks about the political effectiveness of a literature which intents to be subversive, like Marçal´s. Presenting her poetry until 1982, the author discusses three key- points in Marçal´s work: the redefinition of feminine subjectivity, the assumption of maternity and the expression of lesbian love. Marçal was the first author in Catalan history to talk about this kind of love. The writer finds herself in a difficult position, for how can one write without and outside a tradition? She goes through a transition of three stages (from woman to mother to lesbian). Fernàndez shows how, in terms of subjectivity and political effectiveness, this transition has failed, but, on the other hand her poetry is a great succes because it has turned the Catalan tradition around.

"Terra on arrelar": la construcció de genealogia literària femenina segons Maria-Mercè Marçal
Earth to Take Root in': The Construction of a Feminine Literary Genealogy According to Maria-Mercè Marçal
Llorca Antolín, Fina
Clúa Ginés, Isabel
In this article, Fina Llorca Antolín talks about the way Maria-Mercè Marçal intended to create a feminine literary genealogy. When Marçal started to publish, she realised how important it is for a writer to establish a literary filiation. Since there seemed to be only such a filiation among male catalan writers, she started to look for connections with other women who wrote in her language. The writer of this article has analyzed in what way Marçal made her connection to other women writers visible and divided her findings into three groups: her poetic work, theoretical reflection and practical activities and proyects. Llorca Antolín gives examples of each category and shows that it´s in the interviews and declarations to the press where we find the thickness of Marçal´s thoughts on the subject.

Joys and Sorrows of Literary Translation: A Tale of Two Poets

About Freedom, Authority and In/dependency (In the Life and Work of Maria-Mercè Marçal)
Rius Gatell, Rosa
This article pays attention to two moments in the life and work (inseparably united) of Maria Mercè Marçal. The first refers to a search of small objects presided by the moon. Taking this search as a motif, the freedom which the poet confers to the nocturnal light –mythical and magical symbol of femaleness– and, therefore, to that which symbolises the heavenly body, is revealed. The second moment revolves around the reflection of Marçal on the “female authority”. A concept which this author, inspired by the filosofical community Diotima, distinguishes from power. Throughout history, Maria-Mercè Marçal remarked, many women have gained strength from the free atribution of authority to other women, to their texts, to their experiences.

Maria-Mercè Marçal, autora de contes
Maria-Mercè Marçal, Short-Story Writer
Riera, Carme
In this article Carme Riera talks about Marçal as a short-story writer, aspect of the author which is less discussed than her poems and novels, but, according to Riera, not at all insignificant. She discusses the three short stories Marçal wrote for adults: Joc de màscares, El retorn and Tronatrons (unpublished). Riera refers to the game of intertextualtity in Marçal’s work; Joc de màscares, which takes Riera´s novel, Te deix, amor, la mar com a penyora, as a starting point, and Tronatrons, which Riera feels could well be intended to pay a tribute to Víctor Català, whose work was well-known by Marçal. Finally, the author of this article talks about the importance of the recurring motif of the mirror in Marçal´s work, both in her poetry and novels.

Feminismo, estudios culturales y cultura popular
Feminism, Cultural Studies and Popular Culture
Hollows, Joanne
Pitarch, Pau
This paper explores the movement of feminism into academic life in general and the study of popular culture in particular. Assumptioms about the effects of popular culture on women had been a commonsense of second-wave feminism; however, by the mid-1970’s, questions about how gendered identities were culturally produced and reproduced became the topic of much more in-depth feminist research and discussion. This essay examines two main ways in which feminist research into popular culture entered academic life: first, it examines the “images of women” debate, and second, it examines the Cultural Studies tradition and the feminist cultural analysis.

A Plea for Our Future: Language, Technology and the Masculine Lens
Herbst, Claudia
Novell, Noemí
This essay takes a look at the vital role of code literacy in women’s futures and argues that the future of women’s opportunity to participate in the definition of knowledge, its construction and dissemination, is intricately tied up in the developments that are currently taking place at the junction where language and technology intersect. My claims are bold and at the heart of them, the question of literacy –an exclusionary mechanism that historically has been applied in the oppression of women– rears its gendered head. The ensuing discussion is deliberately polemical and proposes that the future of feminism lies in the realm of technology.

Scream, Popular Culture, and Feminism's Third Wave: ‘I'm Not My Mother’
Rowe Karlyn, Kathleen
Clúa Ginés, Isabel
This paper analyzes Wes Craven’s horror trilogy Scream; the trilogy, like all popular texts, is riddled with contradictions about women’s representation that beg a careful analysis based on an informed understanding of media culture and representation, of history, and of the issues that matter to young women today. My reading of the film draws up the connections between Third Wave feminism and popular culture in order to show how these films provide a rich opportunity to study the contradictions and possibilities of feminism in a postmodern age. The purpose here is not to mount an unconditional defense of popular culture, but to argue that women who care about the next generation of girls need to learn more about the popular texts they're drawn to. If a productive conversation is going to happen among women of all ages about the future of the feminist movement, it will have to take place on the terrain of popular culture where young women today are refashioning feminism toward their own ends.
