Abstract

In this paper, adverbial structures in Jovellanos’s Cartas del viaje de Asturias (1782) are syntactically and discursively analyzed. The purpose is to offer new data contributing to the linguistic history of «Early Modern Spanish» and to trace discourse-traditional elements that characterize the (macro)genre of travel literature written in Spanish. German variational linguistics is taken as a theoretical-methodological framework to adequately explain the functioning of syntactic structures and their relationship with the variational structure of their time.
