Abstract

The effect of a sedimentary basin is studied through a numerical analysis of the seismic waves that crosses it, P-waves in the present case. The sedimentary basin is characterized by means of a stratigraphic series with agivennumber of layers and total thickness, as well as the average values of their elastic parameters. For each individual layer the mean value suffers fluctuations randomly generated, with a fixed allowed maximum variation. Numerical examples show that the parameters that most effectively modifies a wave that crosses the stratigraphic series is the characteristic distance, or thickness on the individual layers, and the magnitude of the fluctuations. The response of the stratigraphic series can be interpreted as a low-pass filter superposed to resonant effects and can be observed and quantified from the analysis of the attenuation of the medium and the body wave dispersion.
