Abstract

A deep analysis of the historical data regarding the evolution of the Gallego river during the last 200 years, focusing on its downstream zone (in the vicinity of Zaragoza, Spain), as well as a stndy of its morphodynamics, have shown the dfastic changes experimented by the referred stream during the last three decades. The main cause for those modifications relates to the human activities accomplished in the surroundings of the river (such as gravel extractions or non-controlled solid dumpings), which have reached considerable proportions during the last years, allowing narrowness processes of the stream, an overall increase in the strength of the erosion and the subsequent potential risk of outflows for the studied zone.
