La destrucción de Nínive: temblores, políticas de santidad y la Compañía de Jesús (1687-1692)
Abstract
This paper connects the earthquakes of 1687 and 1690 with the processes of beatification initiated around 1686 and 1691 by the Society of Jesus in Viceregal Peru. Politics of sanctity that articulate a panegyric discourse with the hagiographic literature in vogue as a way to place the most renowned Jesuits (Juan de Alloza, Francisco del Castillo, SJ) in a status of moral superiority before the religious of the mendicant orders. Also, it emphasizes the responsibility of some families, such as the wealthy and influential De León Garavito, in praising the city of Lima and Peru as well as the most illustrious Jesuits at that time.Downloads
