Postemancipation and work in Cuba.
Keywords:
Cuba, Post-emancipation period, Sugar, TransculturationAbstract
This article analyzes the transculturation and the cross-fertilization between different spaces of labor in the post-emancipation period. Cuba is a complex case, for this was a period of gradual disintegration of slavery, anti-colonial wars, and an interrupted technological modernization. While working conditions did not essentially improve in this period, I argue that the sexual division of labor, patterns of mobility, and informal access to landownership did. Cuba’s modernization as a producer of sugar introduced powerful forces in social struggles during this period.Downloads
