Abstract

As cultural activities, independence-day celebrations became an essential symbolic factor to consolidate the Argentinian national State, seeking the «Argentinization» of the population through a strongly homogeneous discourse. However, in praxis, these commemorative days were not free from disputes. This paper studies the areas of negotiation and demand which arose in connection with these celebrations in the northern Patagonian department of Río Negro during the first decades of the twentieth century, when these activities began to play a prominent role on the Territory
