Abstract

The article intends to analyze the prison situation in Brazil and it focuses on this problem: How evolved the prison situation in Brazil and what are the conditions of the Brazilian prison units? As it is a nationwide mapping, we emphasize that that it is a general approach that requires a future development.  The peculiarity of a federal State as Brazil makes any discussion as we propose hard and demands a careful look at the local realities. This article is inserted as part of the activities of our research group “Criminal Policy and Human Rights” (Uniceub-UnB), partner of the international network RELAPT -Red Eurolatinoamericana para la prevención de la Tortura y de la violência institucional. We use documental technique analyses based on official data of international human rights organizations and reports of prison inspection commissions, from 2000 on, especially focused on the period between 2008 and 2014.
