Abstract

This article analyzes the transformations in the structure and functions of the woollen textile firms of the town of Béjar (Salamanca), in the 18th century. The most important changes were: the substitution of the traditional corporations of craftsmen by a single guild of clothiers, an intense process of stratification among clothiers, and the increased direct control over the production process in the workshops. Defensive responses took place, like reinforcing restrictive regulations, particularly at times of productive and commercial difficulties.
