Abstract

This paper analyzes the foundation, development, and dissolution of a machine construction company located on the shores of the Catalan capital: the Arsenal Civil de Barcelona. This monographic study focuses on a firm, founded in 1886 as a naval construction company that was forced to diversify production in order to avoid paralysis. It analyzes its limitations, and production and commercial strategies through this case study of the machinery construction sector during the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries.
