Abstract

The Rio de Janeiro city is organizing its biggest sport event ever: the Panamerican Games 2007. As a Great Project of Urban Development, the pan-2007 covers a broad coalition of interests: the tree spheres of Brazilian public power (federation, states and local governments), the Brazilian Olympic Committee (COB) and several private enterprises. The main point in our research is to verify the confluence between two emergent fields in the contemporary neoliberal scenery: the new sport economy and the new paragon of urban planning and management. We also want to examine the tensions and the role of social movements in this huge transformating that is occurring in the geography of Rio de Janeiro.
