Abstract

Buenos Aires urban system has been subject of major structural transformation processes which are creating a break with traditional urban expansion rules. From 1990 on, the urban reconfiguration has been carried out through insular and closed developments, which are inward oriented and separated from public spaces via security and control measurements. To emphasise one of these elements, pointing out that gated communities in Greater Buenos Aires already extend over 500km2, which is equivalent to two and a half times the surface of the Capital Federal; the central part of the metropolitan area. This paper analyses the lifestyle in these new urban zones through biographic interviews done in Nordelta; the largest real estate project of Buenos Aires. Once fully developed, this private city will count on 80.000 inhabitants and offer them a whole array of urban services.
