Sociology plays a crucial role in students’ education, being a mandatory discipline in the National Common Curricular Base (BNCC). Recently, this discipline has been extended to Educação de Jovens e Adultos (EJA), aiming to question the reality experienced by these learners. EJA is intended for students who have not completed Basic Education within the regular timeframe, representing a different mode of education from the conventional one. In this context, we critically analyze the teaching material in the humanities provided to EJA students on the state of São Paulo, Brazil. Using Freirean logic, we examine how Sociology can serve as an axis of empowerment for learners, proposing improvements in teaching methodology.
