Abstract

Florence, January 1537: after Alessandro de’ Medici’s assassination, the ducal title passed to Cosimo. In spite of domestic and international political difficulties occurring from the beginning of his rule, the young duke built up a strong and centralized state government. In 1539 he married Eleonore, daughter of the viceroy of Naples, Don Pedro de Toledo. Eleonore’s prestige and richness contributed to the strengthening of the Medici family’s state government and the duchess playedan essential role in the management of their power.
