ARCHITECTURE AND URBAN PLANNING IN THE BARCELONA’S CONURBATION. RAMON PUIG GAIRALT, MUNICIPAL ARCHITECT IN THE HOSPITALET DEL LLOBREGAT (1912-1937)
AbstractIn this paper we study the significance of the work of the architects Antonio and Ramon Puig Gairalt, ranging from the first decade of the twentieth century until 1937 and that still survives in many localities of the Catalan territory where they worked. We speak in plural because the Puig Gairalt’s were two brothers, Ramon and Antonio, although in the Hospitalet de Llobregat the interventionsare mainly relate to Ramon Puig Gairalt.
Today many of the works remain as heritage and have come down to us. As is well known, the heritage of many towns and cities is part of a collective memory which identifies a community. Throughout the time, they have been shaping the urban landscape and any community transiting throughout the territory, sets a very direct link whether or not monumental because, in fact, it has become a sign of identity.
The personalities of the two brothers Puig Gairalt were almost unknown when we started the research that was the subject for a degree in History of Art at the University of Barcelona in 1982. Subsequently our work was published and fortunately the existence of this study was used to protect some buildings gone, as also served so that from the l'Hospitalet began the revaluation of Puig Gairalt (a school named after him), and, so, from the late nineties to 2000, some of the housing in the neighborhood of the Torrassa solved using the typology of corridor were the subject of a careful restoration and simultaneously it was started an itinerary through different neighborhoods of the city, in order to show some of the works surviving until today. As rightly said Octavio Paz, "the past is a present just hidden."
