Geología de los materiales Paleozoicos del área de Capellades (Prov. de Barcelona)

Abstract


Between the Congost and Anoia rivers there is a narrow belt of Paleozoic rocks overriding the Paleogene beds of the Ebro basin. The aim of this paper is to describe the geology of these rocks in the area near Capellades. The following rock types can be found in the area: 1) metapelites, 2) greywackes, 3) quartzites, 4) marbles, and 5) metavolcanic basic rocks. Metapelites and greywackes are the most widespread rock types and form most of the Paleozoic area. The quartzites are bounded to two localities, forming thin beds interlayered with slates. Finally, the metavolcanics and the only marble outcrop occur in the southwestern corner of the area. No fossils have been found, and consequently any age atribution can only be based on comparisons with other areas. From these comparisons, the greywackes and pelites forming most of the area can be tentativelly atributed to the Llandeilo-Caradoc, and the part of the sequence containing basic metavolcanic rocks and the marble outcrop can represent the Ashgill. The whole area is affected by a regional metamorphism in the green-schist facies, related to themaindeformation phase. Also, a slaty cleavage, widespread throughout the whole area, and with a general east-west trend was generated during this phase. A later deformation phase gaves way to acrenulation cleavage and to open folds producing changes in the dip of the first cleavage. A small granodioritic body was intruded in the south-western part of the zone, inducing a contact metamorphism. Some pegrnatite veins are also found, related to the granodiorite. Finally, several northeast-trending granodiorite dikes were intruded.
