Resum

Pain and suffering are not synonymous. The main aim of this paper is the conceptualization and study of human suffering, above all though not exclusively, when faced by death. We also highlight the need for empirical evaluation as un initial step in determining the effectiveness of treatment given to avoid, alleviate and overcome such suffering. An evaluation tool is described based on the subjective perception of time and the suggestion is made that counselling techniques constitute the most appropriate method for relieving suffering.
