Background: Neurological Music Therapy (NMT) has developed over the last decades as a structured, evidence-based discipline with theoretical bases arising from neuroscientific studies. It is applied to persons with severe dementia (PwSD) to stimulate cognitive functions and improve emotional and behavioral state.
Objectives: to study the cognitive, emotional and behavioral effects of NMT in PwSD and to introduce the use of the music therapy scale validated in Spanish: Music in Dementia Assessment Scale (MiDAS-ESP).
Methods: Quasi-experimental pre-post repeated measures study with an experimental group of 30 persons. Sociodemographic, clinical, cognitive, behavioral, emotional and quality of life variables were recorded. The intervention consisted of 10 sessions of NMT, performed by an accredited music therapist.
Results: Statistically significant differences were found between the scores recorded before and after the intervention, indicating emotional, behavioral and quality of life improvement. No statistically significant differences were found in global cognition, although improvement was observed. Significant differences were objectified in the MiDAS-ESP scale, showing increased satisfaction during therapy.
