Abstract

In the last years, the concept of strength is gaining interest in the support programs for parents caring for their children with disabilities. This ability involves multiple skills that help people cope with adversity, so that the development of resilience can be a priority to learn how to face a future with many barriers. This study analyzes the strength of a group of parents of children with disabilities according to the stage where they are acquired (developmental and acquired disabilities) and the type of disability (motor, intellectual, visual and auditory). Ninety-six parents of children with different disabilities participated in this study. They answered to the adapted Spanish version of the resilence scale in Wagnild and Young (1993). The results indicated that the highest levels of this capacity are obtained by parents of children with disabilities from their birth. In addition, with motor and sensory disabilities. This suggests that this ability can evolve and hence the importance of promoting it in action and intervention programs.
