Studies on the presence of gender stereotypes on television far outnumber those on the representations used by children to account for these stereotypes. This study concerns the representational-organisational models used by a group of 63 boys and girls aged between 9 and 11 years when watching un extract from a television program showing an argument between a man and a woman about the unequal distribution of domestic chores. The children describe their understanding of the situation and evaluate the affection or lack of afection existing between the characters. The range of representations and meanings found reveals the need to take into account not only the quantity of gender roles on television but also the internal representations generated in order to interpret them.Downloads
