Abstract

Historically, Attention-deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) has been conceptualized as a childhood disorder. Results from longitudinal studies published within the past 15 years have altered this view. Research findings indicate that for approximately 50% of children with ADHD, the symptoms of inattention, hyperactivity, and impulsivity persist into adulthood and continue to cause dtficulties in academic, occupational, and social functioning. The growing recognition and acceptance of ADHD as a valid adult disorder has resulted in an increased demand for diagnostic assessments by adults. This paper will present the most current information available on standard assessment procedures and outline limitations in our knowledge that need to be addressed in future research.
