Abstract

This study analizes the types of coping strategies used by a group of 34 female patients undergoing a cholecystectomy. The aim is twofold: on one hand, to analyse which coping strategies are used most and, on the other hand, to analyse whether these strategies vary during the process, in relation to thepatients' faculty of exerting control over the threat (i.e., the surgical process). The results show that strategies of the avoidant type are the most used, although there is some diversity. On the other hand, stability in the type of coping strategies used by these patients is the common denominator throughout the process.
