Abstract

The residential alternatives open to the elderly in need of care are analysed. The conditions of housing and institutional care in Spain are described and the number of elderly opting for each discussed. The empirical study was conducted on a sample of old people ranging in age from 65 to 80. They were questioned about their preference for future residence given a situation where a lack of functional autonomy gives rise to the need for care. The results highlight the importance attached by the elderly to family support and their rejection of being placed in institutional care.
