Abstract

The concept of adoption, and its practices, have undergone major changes in recent years. The fall in domestic adoption and the rise in adoption of children from abroad has been one of these changes. The characteristics of international adoption -its interethnic and intercultural nature, the fact that two countries and two legislative systems are involved, and the complexity of the bureaucratic process- call for the creation of stable channels of coordination between institutions in the two countries from the very beginning of the proceedings until the end. This process begins with the selection of the applicants, assessment of the child's suitability for adoption, child-family matching, parent's acceptance, the resolution of the adoption in the child's home country and recognition in Spain.
