Guidelines for authors

Rules for the submission of originals and reviews in the new phase of the journal INDICE HISTÓRICO ESPAÑOL

When writing texts, authors must follow the criteria dictated by APA style, whose rules indicate the inclusive and non-discriminatory mode of expression in the content of the research work and the way of structuring citations and bibliography used in the research study.

The publication welcomes submissions in Spanish, English, French, Italian, and Portuguese, as well as the other official languages of Spain: Catalan, Basque, and Galician.

Articles will have a length between 8,000 and 12,000 words for the sections "Research Articles" and "States of the Matter", between 5,000 and 7,000 for the section "Didactics of History" and between 800 and 1,200 words for the "Reviews", including notes, bibliography, figures, graphs and appendix. They should be presented with 1.5 line spacing, in 12-point Times New Roman font, and on consecutively numbered pages without headings.

Reviews: Only books and monographs may be reviewed, but not journal articles. Each review must be headed with a bibliographic reference to the book reviewed, following the guidelines below, which will also apply to the bibliographic references of the submitted works. In electronic editions, this reference will be included after the publisher's name.

The method for citing sources and bibliographies is as follows:

-In-text citations:

These must include the last name (or the title of the work if the work is unnamed) and the year of publication. They should be presented as follows: (Last name, year of publication).

Literal citations within the text must also include the page number: (Last name, year of publication, p. X).

For long citations (40 words or more), they should be in a separate block without quotation marks, with no extra spacing, and the citation should be indented. The page number should be indicated at the end. This should be as follows: Last name (year): Indented text (p. X).

When they are not direct quotes, but rather indirect or paraphrased references to a text and author. The content referenced in a text must be included at the end (Author's last name, year of publication, p. X).

These methods can be incorporated into the text or noted at the end of the page using sequential numbering. At the end of the work, all the information will be provided as described in the bibliographic reference.

 -Bibliographic references:

At the end of the paper, a list must be presented alphabetically, sorted by the author's first surname. References after the first line should be double-spaced (french indent) to quickly identify the author's surname.

If an author is mentioned more than once, the chronological order should be followed, from oldest to most recent.

Such references (if they are not anonymous works) should include the last name and first initial as follows:

Last name, N. (year of publication). Book title in italics. Subtitle. Publisher.

If there is more than one author and up to 20 authors: Last name, N., Last name, N., and Last name, N. (year of publication). Title of the book. Publisher.

For an editor or editors: Last name, N. (Ed.). (Year). Title in italics. Publisher.

Work published in various volumes: Last name, N. (Ed.). (Year). Title in  italics. (Vol. ...). Publisher.

Book chapters: Surname, N., year of publication. Chapter title without italics or quotation marks. In N. Surname (Ed.), Book title in italics (pp. X-X). Publisher.

Journal articles: Last name, N. (year). Title of the article. Title of the journal  in italics (issue or volume), pages (not including the abbreviation: pp. or p.).  The journal title must be complete.

Congress proceedings: Last name, N. (year). Conference title in italics.  City. Publisher.

Online materials (please provide detailed information on where to find them).  https://...........

-Tables, graphs, and maps must be consecutively numbered, inserted into the text (except if they are part of an Appendix), and must be original. A title must also be provided to identify them, and the sources used in their preparation must be specified. They must be explained as follows:

Figure. 1. Title in italics. And so on.

Table. 1. Title in italics. And so on.

-Footnotes:

(When they are not direct citations, but indirect ones) that refer to the content of the text and to an author, they will be numbered (at the bottom of the page), in superscript. They will be used to provide data or observations that complement the content of the text, and to briefly cite the bibliographic references and archival sources used, which will be extended in the bibliography included at the end.

Bibliographical notes provide only the author's surname, the year of publication, and—if necessary—the page(s). For example: Castells, 2001, p. 25. If there are more than three authors, only the first may be included, followed by the phrase "et al.".

Abbreviated cites should be included in the notes, not in the text.

In archival sources, a shortened reference will be made with the initials of the archive or documentation center, except for the first time it is cited, and its location reference, so that the rest of the data will be included at the end of the research work following the sources section.

-Sources:

The sources of any type (archives, newspaper archives, documentation center, companies, epigraphic, numismatic, literary, papyrological...) consulted will be specified in their own section before the bibliography.

The citation method, both within the text and at the end, should be:

For letters or personal documents: Last name, Name initial (if the author is listed). (Year or  approx. year of writing). Title of the document in italics [Unpublished manuscript]. Entity or Center where it is kept, city.

When it comes to documentation held in archives: It is recommended to include the name of the Archive where it is located the first time it is cited, and if it is cited multiple times, include only the archive's initials on subsequent occasions: Surname, Name initial (year/s). Title of the  document in italics (collection). Name of the Archive, town, state. Abbreviated folio(s) f. or ff., along with r. i/o v.

-Bibliography:

The complete bibliography should appear at the end of the article or state of the matter, arranged alphabetically by last name. The bibliographical references section should indicate how the works should be cited: books, book chapters, congress, journal articles, etc.

When citing more than one book by the same author, the references should be ordered by publication date, from oldest to most recent.

-Electronic Resources:

Electronic resources must be cited following the basic criteria used for referencing bibliographic resources, but some essential variants will be added to properly locate the electronic source. These variants include the type of medium, availability, and access.

Electronic resources should be cited according to the following general model:

Surname and Name of the primary responsible. (Year of publication). Title in italics. Secondary responsible(es). Edition. Place of publication. Date of update or revision. The  email address should be https://...... and, if it is possible, <Availability and access>.

-Other aspects for the presentation of the originals:

Papers must be submitted through the UB journals' manuscript management system (https://revistes.ub.edu/index.php/IHE/user/register ). Authors must register to submit their papers and complete all the requested information.

Authors must initially submit different documents, using Microsoft Word or OpenOffice formats:

1st - Authors' information: These will appear below the title of the work and are as follows: Name and surname of all authors, institutional affiliations (institution, city, country), email address, ORCID identification number.

A summary of the work must be included below in the language in which it was written, one in Spanish or Catalan, and one in English. These three summaries must be accompanied by four or five keywords in the corresponding languages. If the language is Italian, Portuguese, or French, the first summary must be in the language in which it was written, the second in Spanish, and the third in English.

It's necessary to attach a short curriculum vitae (less than 150 words) in the same language as the work. You can also indicate funding or recognition sources.

2º- Original: Text length: between 8,000 and 12,000 words for the "Research Articles" and "States of the Matter" sections; between 5,000 and 7,000 words for the "Didactics of History" section; and between 800 and 1,200 words for the "Book Reviews," taking into account the inclusion of notes, figures, graphs, bibliographies, and appendices.

Articles and States of the Matter: The author must submit two originals. One must include the following information: title, author's full name (Name and Surname), academic affiliation, email address, and ORCID number. Three abstracts must also be included: one in the language of the work, one in Spanish, and one in English. If the work was written in Spanish, the three languages will be Spanish, Catalan, and English (approximately 150 words are recommended). This will be accompanied by four or five keywords in the various languages of the summary.

The other original—which will be used for evaluation—will include the following: the title, abstracts of fewer than 150 words in Spanish, Catalan, and English, along with four or five keywords in the same languages as the abstract. The following should be excluded from the abstract: the author's full name (Name and Surname), academic affiliation, email address, and ORCID.

After completing the evaluation process and accepting the work for publication, the author will correct the errors and add the recommendations suggested by them. A revised copy will be sent, adding the following information in the order mentioned:

Title, author's full name (Name and Surname), academic affiliation, email address, and ORCID number.

Abstract in Spanish and 4 or 5 keywords.

Abstract in Catalan and 4 or 5 keywords.

Abstract in English and 4 or 5 keywords.

Author's full name (Name and Surname) and brief CV.

Next, include the text of the work, with notes, images inserted in the corresponding place and a bibliography at the end (it is recommended to read the sections that explain how to cite the bibliography and footnotes).

It is imperative to adhere to the journal's Standards. Failure of the text or procedure to comply with the journal's Standards will result in the submission being returned to the author.

No article that does not meet all of these requirements will be submitted for review or published.

The journal warns authors that their manuscripts may be subject to plagiarim assessment processes; for this purpose, it uses the Urkund software, which is available to journals belonging to the University of Barcelona (CRAI).

Book reviews: A bibliographical note (see the section on how to complete a bibliographical note) must be included at the beginning. After the text, the author's full name (Name and Surname) must be included in small capitals, and the academic affiliation, email address, and ORCID number must be included in italics.

-Evaluation system:

The Editorial Board of ÍNDICE HISTÓRICO ESPAÑOL will carry out a preliminary review of the originals (articles and states of the matter) received within a maximum period of one month from their receipt, which may be rejected for not meeting the journal's requirements in terms of content or presentation.

The evaluation system is based on anonymous external evaluators, using a double-blind system (anonymous for both the evaluator and the author). Once the text has been provisionally accepted, it will be sent to at least two external reviewers, who must report on it using the form the journal will send them along with the text. Under no circumstances may the reviewers be members of the journal's Editorial Board. The Editorial Board, based on the reviewers' reports, will decide, within a maximum period of six months from receipt, on the publication of the article received. The author will receive a report explaining the reasons for acceptance, any modifications that would need to be made before publication, or rejection.

For articles or states of the matter that require modifications, publication will always be conditional on these improvements being incorporated into the new version of the text. The final decision on publication always rests with the Editorial Board.

Once the article or state of the matter has been definitively accepted for publication, it must be resubmitted, scrupulously complying with the journal's Guidelines for Authors.

Book reviews will not be evaluated, although we will ensure that they have been written by individuals qualified in the field.
