Abstract

This article analyses the contents of a part of Ibn al-ʿArabī’s Kitāb Šawāhid al-Ǧilla about Ibn ʿAbd al-Ǧabbār al-Mahdī’s struggle against Sulaymān al-Mustaʿīn to win the caliphate title in al-Andalus. For this purpose, the author of the text compiled fragments of Ibn Ḥayyān’s Muqtabis that do not appear in any other work. The selected accounts provide new information about the battle of the Guadiaro, the subsequent distribution of the spoils and the legitimising arguments used by Sulaymān al-Mustaʿīn’s supporters. The results of the study make it necessary to revise the discourse elaborated on the basis of the classic works of R. P. A. Dozy and É. Lévi-Provençal, which are still present on this issue.
