Abstract

The interest for a better understanding of the economic and patrimonial basis of medieval hospitals dates to the origins of these institutions. Their own administrators developed different types of documents to better organize and control them. However, scientific interest in these mechanisms did not come until the beginning of the 20th century, when historians realized that hospital’s documentation was useful for the study of economic history. The aim of this article is to uncover the research that has been done about the management of hospitals during the Late Middle Ages, as well as to point out the current historiographic trends and the future challenges the discipline will have to face.
