Abstract

The aim of this article is to analyze the role of ruined cities and monuments described in Pausanias’ Periegesis, and how these elements contribute to a nostalgic and idealized representation of the ancient remnants of the pre-Hellenistic Greek past. Furthermore, it examines Pausanias’ memorial effort of re-Hellenization within the context of 2nd-century CE Roman Greece.
