Abstract

This study analyses a Spanish vowel acquisition process by Dutch learners thorough a longitudinal study using semi-spontaneous style elicited data. Next, reference values for the vowels pronounced by Spanish speakers are obtained in the same phonological context and also spontaneous style. The comparison of stressed and unstressed vowels on the one hand and monitorized and semi-spontaneous style on the other hand indicate tendency to central articulation as the most relevant trends. Relaxed articulation, high variability and overlapped vocalic clusters appear to be the semi-spontaneous style most relevant features. The data shows that for Dutch speakers, Spanish /i/ and /u/ seem to be easiest, /e/ and /o/ more unstable and difficult and /a/ the most difficult.
