Hysterical Women and Wild Animals: Parallels in the Construction of Female and Animal Alterity

Abstract

In the present paper I aim to explore the connections between the discourses that structure female difference and those that structure animal difference by documenting three major convergence points: denial of reason, denial of language, and the insistence that both female and animal bodies are inherently wild, the origin of their difference.

Mònica Tomàs White es filóloga y traductora. Obtuvo su BA en Literatura Comparada y Filología Francesa de UC Berkeley en 2010, y el título de master en Estudios de Mujeres, Género y Ciudadanía de la Universidad de Barcelona en 2013. Actualmente es doctoranda en el programa de Ciudadanía y Derechos Humanos del Departamento de Filosofía Teorética y Práctica de la Universidad de Barcelona.
