Abstract

The work addresses the relationship between violence, history and humanism from the so-called existentialist writings of Maurice Merleau-Ponty. The condition of being situated of the human being opens a field of reflection where thought is intertwined with historical experience. This experience appears to us traversed by violence. In our article we will stop to point out the way in which the French philosopher carries out a critique of liberal humanism and tries to propose a thought that accounts for the concrete experience of the human being. This does not mean an abandonment of the values proclaimed by humanism, but rather the way in which, by not considering material, symbolic and political conditions, they become discourses that are not embodied in the effective reality of community life.
