Abstract

This article tries to clarify misunderstandings surrounding the reception of Barthes in Spanish literary and intellectual fields during the years of late Francoism and the transition to democracy. We will explain why the thesis of Barthes on the problems of language and the “death of the author” were perceived as an anti-historical and unengaged theoretical activity in Spain. The second part of this study analyzes Barthes’ testimonial literature which could ultimately reveal affinities with the literary needs of Spanish historical memory, still active nowadays.
