Abstract

This article considers the importance of the connection between the fantastic in the French topos of “killing the mandarin” and the complex representation of China in the novel O Mandarim, by Eça de Queirós. Our perspective privileges the role of the book in the text, its writing and reading, focusing on the contribution of a rhetorics of distance and replacement to produce a mediated and artificialized vision of the East.
