Literature and Autobiopolitics: Michel Foucault's Contribution to the Theory of Autobiography

Abstract

This paper approaches Michel Foucault’s work to note and analyze some of his ideas in relation to autobiographical literature. The hermeneutics of the subject set up by Foucault in his latest research resulted in the development of some classical practices of self-care. Biopolitics or the politics of bodies is then interpreted as self- biopolitics. In this context, Foucault finds that some of the practices from the Greek-Roman era share characteristics with autobiographical texts of posterior centuries. This paper seeks to interpret these texts, as well as some of Foucault’s ideas, and establish a dialogue with contemporary theory of autobiography.

Álvaro Luque Amo, Universidad de Granada

Álvaro Luque Amo es licenciado en Filología Hispánica por la Universidad de Córdoba y Máster en Estudios Literarios por la Universidad de Granada. Ha colaborado con el Departamento de Literatura Española de la Universidad de Córdoba y ha estado becado en el Centro de Ciencias Humanas y Sociales del CSIC, en Madrid. Actualmente disfruta de una beca FPU en el Departamento de Lingüística General y Teoría de la Literatura de la Universidad de Granada, con una tesis sobre la teoría del diario literario y la obra de Andrés Trapiello. Sus líneas de investigación se centran en la escritura diarística y se encuadran en el marco de la Teoría de la Literatura y la Literatura Española.
