Abstract

Taking a scene from Jacques Rivette's Out 1 as a model, this paper aims to analyze a tendency in films by Rivette, Manoel de Oliveira, Rita Azevedo and Matías Piñeiro, presenting literary texts in the mise-en-scène. In these films, characters join in some kind of reading, enunciating and interpreting of texts. In this way, the films problematize the relationship between film and literature and present images as ghosts that are contained within a word or are invoked by it. The films' model of mise-en-scène reveals a certain working method around words as film material.
