Abstract

This article enquires the critical tradition behind Michael Winterbottom's reading of Sterne’s Tristram Shandy for his film adaptation of the novel (2005). The English filmmaker takes up a long genealogy of readings that have focused on the formal mechanisms and parody devices of the novel, which goes back to the Russian formalists. This genealogy overrides the contextual anchors of the novel and generally leads to its dehistoricization. This dehistoricization serves as a basis for the aesthetic appropriation that takes place in the film and the re-functionalization of a large part of these formal mechanisms.
