English-speaking Gauchos and the Technicolor Pampas: Versions and Perversions of Martín Fierro in Way of a Gaucho (1952), by Jacques Tourneur

ThefilmWay of a Gaucho (1952), directed by Jacques Tourneur, was based on the homonymous novel by Herbert Childs, who in turn had probably drawn inspiration from José Hernández’s Martín Fierro (1872 and 1879). The global character of the project is thus made evident by a chain of rewritings that links a French director with an American journalist and a classic text from Argentinean literature. In this sense, this essay deals with the image of the English-speaking gaucho in the Technicolor Pampas as an instance of the usual aberrations in Tourneur’s filmography, in order to relocate the problems inherent to the formation of a national canon and the construction of the gaucho as an icon of Argentinean identity within the recent debates on world literature and film.Downloads
