Abstract

Rafael Chirbes published Crematorio in 2007 and En la orilla in 2013, two novels that appear, respectively, during the final splendour of the real estate boom and after the financial crisis. In these novels, the author represents a Mediterranean Sea that has nothing to do with the tourist imaginary, but rather with its reverse: the Mediterranean of mass tourism, real estate exploitation and pollution. Through the spatial turn and ecocriticism as theoretical tools, this article reflects on the narrative space of these novels and the way in which the Valencian writer proposes a unique critique of the Mediterranean coast. The objective is to reflect on the way in which Chirbes points to certain tensions between the local and the global.
