Abstract

This article intends to approach the debate around the existence and specificity of an Austrian literature from a comparative perspective, by taking into account the «unpatriotic literature» (or Antiheimatsliteratur) phenomenon, and, more specifically, by analyzing Heldenplatz, Thomas Bernhard’s last play. We will focus on the dialogue that the play establishes with national history and the local territory. Furthermore, we will try to underline, on the one hand, the tensions that arise between Heldenplatz and some of the most relevant approaches to the «Austrian literature» debate (mainly, those from Claudio Magris and Ulrich Greiner), and, on the other hand, the questions that can be posed to Comparative Literature regarding the position that the play holds between the national and the international, as well as the negative link that Heldenplatz builds with Austria as a nation.
