Abstract

The aim of this paper is to analyze the configuration of urban space in El aire (1992), by Sergio Chejfec, a novel that composes the form of a future city through an imaginary of the ruins. We consider that the multiplication of ostensible signs of deterioration in fiction is produced both by the reference to the empirical city and by the dialogue with the theses of Ezequiel Martínez Estrada. We maintain that it is through the conjectural form of the novel that the relationship between literature and the extraliterary domain is established. In short, the novel is considered a privileged space to display a series of hypotheses about what Chejfec calls the “meaning of the social world”.
