Abstract

The aim of this article is to develop and propose a line of questioning for contemporary literary theory around the concepts of “archive” and “intertextuality”. Firstly, the current panorama of interdisciplinary studies on the question of the archive is reconstructed, in order to propose an “archival turn” in contemporary artistic criticism. Secondly, Juan José Mendoza's conceptualization of “hyperarchives” is recovered, questioning his ontological commitments (in particular, of object-oriented ontology) and his rereading of the notion of “intertextuality”. Finally, we continue this theoretical import to affirm that intertextuality is, in its fundamental features, a causal relationship, so that any question about the archive and intertextuality depends on the theory of causality that it supposes and puts into action.
