This study offers a counterpoint reading between two novels that are considered rewritings of the well-known English canonical works by the Brontë sisters, Jane Eyre and Wuthering Heights. Namely, Wide Sargasso Sea (1966), by Jean Rhys, and La migration des coeurs (1995), by Maryse Condé. These rewritings are scriptural projects that question the dominant European socio-cultural conceptions. In general terms, the two novels are reworkings that follow a project of resistance against imperialist ideology. We propose that their novels give new meaning to those culturally-conditioned judgments and criteria, such as the subordinate position of women in the family environment, their economic dependence and their being determined in the social hierarchy according to origin and race.
